Gradual melting of the Greenland ice sheet, above left, might weaken the North Atlantic Current
Edited on Wed Sep-22-10 02:53 PM by defendandprotect
Gradual melting of the Greenland ice sheet might weaken the North Atlantic Current, which bathes parts of Europe with equatorial water. But any cooling effect in Europe would be overwhelmed by a general warming of the atmosphere.

In fact, UN says would slow Atlantic Current by 25% by end of 2100 --

----------------------

That's the argument, folks --

Yes -- Global Warming is impacting the North Atlantic Current -- and other currents --

but don't worry ... because we will be saved by Global Warming heating up the planet!!

1. exactly!
Just stock up on sunscreen and scuba gear! ...nothing to see here folks...

What is going to be really interesting is when the currents shift drastically, and animals start migrating differently, and of course the crop failures, etc..

but the worst part?...the crickets this thread will no doubt recieve....because nobody wants to think about it too much.

Glad you got it!!

5. The other "thread on this subject" ...
Edited on Thu Sep-23-10 02:23 PM by SidDithers
said that the North Atlantic Current had stopped, because of oil spilled in the Gulf of Mexico. It was pure shithattery, that deserved to be moved into DU's loony bin.

ETA: thread in question

3. how about a KICK?
(not that anyone will have any more to say on the subject)

but where are all our science people here on DU?
Why can't someone speak to the currents shifting, resulting weather patterns we are already seeing, etc...? or has it already been said by the researchers and nobody wants to think about the Reality..The human race has ALL got their fingers in their collective ears and is singing LALALA very loudly.

Meanwhile climate shift keeps happening all around us, and it is even happening faster than the models.
So instead of 'the end of the century' it is now the end of the deacde...or in the next 5 years!
That's a *huge* difference, why no response?

because it can't be fixed and it is better for us to be the frog that boils, leaping out of the pot was our option in the 70s, not anymore...

yikes, man

9. Thanks so much ... scanned thru page 6 ... startling stuff -- !!!

On the other hand, we are changing the ocean's circulation in ways that we don't understand and whose consequences we aren't prepared for."

"Antarctic and Greenland losing ice at 2X the rate of 2002"

First, the PACE --

Not frequently mentioned, but we had a 50 year delay in feeling the effects of Global

Warming -- right now we're only feeling the effects going back to 1960!

Also few understand the fresh water/salinity dynamic -- and no way to say how all of

this may compound. "Ocean controls the ice" --

"Warm water enough to kill Antarctic ice shelf - the largest in the world."

"Arctic Surprise" Glaciers in "runaway feedback mode."

"Dramatic change to water and wind and ice caused by Global Warming have not only

accelerated but have themselves begun to alter the climate, creating a dynamic that

could be irreversible."

Capitalism's suicidal exploitation of nature, natural resources, animal-life --

and even other human beings according to various myths of "inferiority" gave us

in return a system of "bus-i-ness" which polluted and destroyed all of NATURE.

NATURE IS ALL!

10. Indeed thank you
I've started posting articles like this as a blog, in an attempt to track the progression of climate change as it happens.

12. Change from Global Warming to "climate change" was suggested by GOP propagandist Frank Luntz....
to W Bush in 2002 --

Global Warming is the original term used since the mid-1950's --

and it makes clear that what we are talking about is HEATING up the atmosphere

which creates chaotic weather.

13. And if the North Atlantic current is disrupted...
Edited on Thu Sep-23-10 04:19 PM by SidDithers
what happens to Great Britain and Northern Europe? Do they get warmer, or cooler?

Global Climate Change is a much better description of what is happening. Some parts of the earth will get warmer, some will get cooler, and some parts will experience much more severe weather.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was created by the UN in December 1988. That's just a few years before Frank Luntz and George Bush got involved.

15. black swans
There is a term floating around to talk about unpredictable but big and important events-Black swans. It is kind of scary that these sorts of big changes, like a major change in the North Atlantic Current, could suddenly cause. I think that this is a hugely important thing to study, as these radical changes can cause all sorts of upheaval.
