Why are Stars Millions of Light Years Away? Creationist board answers:

Why are Stars Millions of Light Years Away?
by Ken Ham

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork (Psalm 19:1).

Brendon, what a question! Yes, we know from the dates God gives us in the Bible that He did create the whole universe about 6,000 years ago. When we hear the term light-year, we need to realize it is not a measure of time but a measure of distance, telling us how far away something is. Distant stars and galaxies might be millions of light-years away, but that doesn’t mean that it took millions of years for the light to get here, it just means it is really far away!

When God created the universe, everything was already working perfectly, exactly how He wanted it to work. So, I believe the stars could be seen (however God did that) on earth as soon as God spoke them into existence. Keep enjoying the splendor of the night sky, but remember that God created it to display His glory so we could behold how wonderful and powerful our Creator really is!

Actually, the universe is only a few minutes old, we are just programs god made and our memories were planted....

6. Ok, I am going to be thinking about that one
The profoundest quote I found this year was in The Agnostic Reader: Religions consider people who don't believe in God to be "immoral".

Presumably, it is one's duty to attend services to reinforce their belief to drive away any doubt about God.

22. Not all Christians believe that way.
Don't confuse the vocal Bible banging literalists with all of Christianity. They are only one part and many of them are willfully ignorant. But that isn't the whole - many Christians wrestle with doubt and actively question their beliefs.

and, obviously, many people choose to be idiots, sadly.

anyone who holds such beliefs, honestly, has no business teaching children. they're too stupid.

35. And they believe that because of a question someone asked
upthread about why does God turn the stars off at night...

See, if the stars were really millions of light years away, it would take that long for us to see them in between daytime (when God turns them off) and nighttime (when God turns them back on again).

The very fact that we can see them as soon as it gets dark means they're really only about 50 miles away.

12. My new boss (I actually worked for him at another compay
20 years ago) is a Creationist who believes in an 8,000 year old Earth. He is actually a fine engineer, but has a closed mind when it comes to this subject. I really want to avoid debating this point now with him (it used to be fun), but my coworker (who I think is also something of a creationist) dragged me into a debate with my boss on Friday. I am not discussing this topic anymore at work.

I have found, just like Ken Miller (the author of my daughter's Biology book), that you cannot even debate if ultimately they believe that God can essentially "trick" you by making all the geological, astrophysical, and paleotological data at a starting point that appears to be older than it actually is. No matter how much evidence is stacked up, it has no effect.

I mentioned Occam's Razor, but that has no effect.

29. This is taken directly from "Landover Baptist", a Fundie
parody site (which is really a howl). I don't know if the purported question and answer in the post are also from that source - if they are in fact legitimate I suggest you compare it to Landover's parody Q&A referred to in your post - reality is stranger (and funnier) than parody.

veracity to the statement. The sign of a weak argument that the writer resorts to using a cheap device to add validity to the statement.

19. "however God did that"
Ah, yes, the signature cry of the anti-science fundamentalist crowd.

DON'T bother looking for reasons why things work the way they do.

Just KNOW that God moved in one of his mysterious ways and don't trouble your sinning mind about it. Oh, and please give generously when the plate is passed.

24. OK, so, wait. Something is millions of light-years away. A light-year is how far light travels in
a year. So millions of light-years...does NOT represent a length traveled in millions of years? It just means..."really far away"?

How do they say these things with a straight face? No, really? HOW?

28. So you must be one on them so-called scientists with the pointy head.

According to the bible light travels really, really slow and time is warped (all scientists agree with the bible on that) so it only seems like millions of years for us to see far away stuff when it's actually less than 6,000 years old! Bet you didn't know that!

And God made stars twinkle to show us how powerful he is and to make it easier for us to spot them.

34. I find it interesting that religious people parse out life experiences...
...and attribute all the good things to god and all the bad things to some other philosophical principal...all without a shred of supporting evidence for that process.

I don't remember god saying anywhere that he is never responsible for bad stuff. But I do remember reading god actually doing bad stuff, like drowing the whole earth and destroying a whole city and in the book of mormon, telling a guy to cut off another guy's head. Then there was killing off a whole nation's first borns after infecting the nation will boils and locusts. Oh and god told Plain that she's on the right track which is really the wrong track for most of us...but I digress.

god worked very hard to trick us into doubting his word, as a test.

same thing with the fossil record and carbon dating.

no, i don't believe that at all, but it's the exact argument i've heard from creationists.

Just because Argentina is dozens of car-hours away doesn't mean it takes dozens of hours to get there! Cuz car-hours is a unit of distance, not time!
