I would not answer that question if I was not hiding them. Then it would give cover to those that do while I take up resources.


Although it is a great question. I would trust that I could answer every question without lying, yet still saying nothing.


Although that gets into concept of knowing someone will misinterpret what you say, which if that is the intent would be deception.


So I would trust in some way to answer without intentionally misleading, but without saying anything.

There is a post I had on that about secrecy. All secrecy is bad also.

But people have hidden combination on safes. And that is secrecy. So in an imperfect world, there is systems that let some things happen, but with oversight and the most carefullest of laws, since they will lead to corruption.

There is accountability of what could be in a safe for that reason.

There are some circumstances in an imperfect world where people make decisions to not do the best choice. The problem is when people make those decisions not because they have to, but because it is the quicker easier pick of what to do. Or when it is done because someone thinks they can get away with it, not because of some better situation to occur.


Or some make it because they don't think there will be a way without choosing that option, then what got them to make that decision actually trains them to be that way. So in the lie example, the thing making you think you have to lie can pressure you till lying is a pattern. And then you lie when it is not for some really important no other choice found thing.

Although I think there usually is a third option available.

I'm not saying the following has anything to do with O'Donnell's answer, which I haven't looked at.

But the question reminds me of something from a college class on morals and philosophy. This question was considered by Immanuel Kant in his "On the Supposed Right to Lie Because of Philanthropic Concerns". The situation mentioned then was oddly similar--a murderer comes to your door looking to kill your friend, who is hiding in your place. What do you say when he asks if your friend is there? Kant ended up concluding that you should tell the truth. Honestly, I never really fully understood his reasoning, which has to do with the value of truth and the categorical imperative.

Again, I'm not saying O'Donnell was or was not thinking of this. Just an aside.
