Reid signals support for ending tax cuts for the wealthy
Despite the growing chorus of Democrats calling for the extension of all Bush-era tax cuts, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday signaled that he will put forward a proposal that will extend only those tax breaks benefiting the middle-class.

"Regardless of what any individual senator may think about tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, I had hoped we could all agree that middle-class families deserve to have their taxes cuts," he said Monday in prepared remarks, adding that extending tax cuts for the wealthy is "bad economic policy that will hurt our nation and its recovery."

Reid claims that extending the tax cuts for wealthier taxpayers would secure more "giveaways for millionaires and CEOs who ship American jobs overseas."

Reid is expected act first on the Bush tax cuts and is expected to take them up after his chamber acts on legislation providing tax relief and loan opportunities to small businesses.

1. Good!
Put it up for a vote, anyone who votes against tax breaks for those making under $250,000 will be having a lot of explaining to do to the people back home! Republicans or so called democrats who want to give the rich tax cuts, and would vote against giving he only to the group making under $250,000 should be voted out of office! It's that simply in my book! Harry need to make them stand up and be counted in a vote so the american people can see just how it is that is voting against helping them!

I find it very hard to believe that the majority of americans would be fine with losing their tax cuts because a bunch of "rich" members of congress wanted more tax cuts for themselves and their rich buddies!

3. This isn't rocket surgery, Harry
You don't have to "signal" anything about asking the wealthy to pay a smidgen more to support the society that has enriched them so handsomely. Say it right out: "I'm against an unfunded giveaway to the wealthy; it's time for them to pay their own way, instead of depending on the rest of America to not only fight but fund their wars of empire."

See how easy that is?

6. Amazingly enough, I just received an e-mail from Mr. Reid
An invitation to a reception and dinner Sept. 22 in New York with several Democratic party luminaries! Very exciting. I responded thusly:

Dear Mr. Reid,

Thank you for the handsome invitation; not to be cliché, but it's an honor just to be asked. Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend the reception and dinner in New York, but in consolation, allow me to offer to you a phrasing for addressing Republican opposition to allowing the ruinous policies from the Bush-era tax cut to expire: "I'm against an unfunded giveaway to the wealthy; it's time for them to pay their own way, instead of depending on the rest of America to not only fight but fund their wars of empire."

Please feel free to use this sentence as you see fit.

Sincerely,

I can't tell you how delightful it was to proffer my advice (almost) directly to the Senate Majority Leader.

5. I don't have a lot of faith in Reid's words...
Too much has been squandered in the past trying to be all bi-partisan and everything.
