HAPPY VALLEY -- Racist graffiti and threats that terrified a Vietnamese American family and shocked the city turned out to be the work of the family's oldest son, police said Friday.

Detective Jim Strovink, Clackamas County sheriff's spokesman, said the 16-year-old boy apparently was distraught by the family's recent move to Happy Valley from Southeast Portland because he didn't want to be separated from his school friends.

"So what you have is a very misguided, emotionally disturbed kid trying to get his parents' attention," Strovink said. "It is a family tragedy."

Strovink said the boy is very remorseful and was amazed at how large quick the response was from the community and law enforcement.

Detective Gil Millett, who investigated the case for Happy Valley police and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said the boy has apologized to his parents, police and the community.
