You can call Courage a poster pup, officially.

The 3-year-old German shepherd was found emaciated and near death in April in his Bellflower home. Veterinarians at an Orange County pet hospital discovered he had eaten dirt to live.

His owner, Kimberly Nizato, was charged with felony animal cruelty. She will be back in court Sept. 14 as her preliminary hearing continues.

Courage weighed 37 pounds four months ago. With a boost from blood transfusions, IV fluids and a high-calorie diet, he quickly put on weight. He weighs 85 pounds today and is living with a new family and a canine companion.

German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County, the nonprofit that helped care for the dog, has chronicled Courage’s recovery in a 2011 calendar. Proceeds from the sale of the calendars will benefit GSROC, so the group can assist more dogs with critical needs.

2. What a beautiful animal...my heart breaks that he went through such torture. I just do
not understand how a person could ever willingly hurt a child or an animal. I don't understand that at all. I can't even go into a pound to pick out a kitty to bring home to love, without crying because of all the sad little faces there.

5. Animal cruelty twists my insides
I am anti-death penalty, except for animal cruelty that results in the death of the animal. Poachers definitely. If not the death penalty, then a bloody beat down and 20 years without parole. I despise that sub-class of people.

8. What a beautiful shepherd - I love the big breeds like Courage
And they damn well better put in prison the POS that starved him. If it was up to me I'd put her on the blandest most minimum diet I could find.

I wouldn't be inhumane and starve her - but I'd see to it the taste of the food wasn't any pleasurable experience for a few months. Served room temperature. Only water for liquids.
