Best. Idea. Ever.
Edited on Tue Aug-31-10 01:41 PM by NC_Nurse
http://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/d7ntl/ive_had_a_vision_and_i_cant_shake_it_colbert/

I've had a vision and I can't shake it: Colbert needs to hold a satirical rally in DC.

"I was woken in the middle of the night by this(along with the sound of my cat getting ready to pee on the rug).

Think about it. It'll be just like Colbert's mockery of GW Bush at the 2006 White House Correspondent's Dinner, but 500,000 people will be able to participate with him. We'll all stay totally in character as teabaggers. The kid with the microphone that interviews all the idiots at these things can come by and we'll ramble into his microphone.

This would be the high water mark of American satire. Half a million people pretending to suspend all rational thought in unison. Perfect harmony. It'll feel like San Francisco in the late 60s, only we won't be able to get any acid.

I know you're out there somewhere, Stephen, watching LOLcat gifs along side us. We need you. There's no way to have a logical public discussion with the teabaggers. The best we can do is to mimic them. Show them a mirror and hopefully some will realize how ridiculous they actually are... Or maybe they won't even realize that they're being mocked, which could be even more awesome."

This post is on Reddit right now. Some great ideas and hilarious responses...Love it!

26. Someone in the original thread had the idea of Tina Fey showing up in character
as Sarah Palin.

There is so much room for creativity with this idea. The possibilities are just endless, and every single person in the crowd could give their own input.

In theory, it could end up being the most hilarious, poignant gag ever pulled off by Homo sapiens.

with cameos from other people like Stewart or Connan, and make it a comedy thing?

That sounds pretty funny, and could be interesting.

Could have some newscasters doing some satire coverage, Olberman, Rachel.

And have it on halloween, with everyone in costume, LOL that would cook a few neurons. LOL

The only thing is it should not be to tease Glenn, since he does the best he can, but to be just to have a good time :)

Could even add that it is inspired by Glenn, that would be nice to him :)

Although imitation is flattery, so the skits would be funny :)

Doubt it would be politically smart, but would be fun :) Politically it lets someone set your direction, with a no win to it, since if you get a crowd you have some fun and share attention.

If anything went wrong, you share attention and Glenn would gloat with spin,

The political reality of such a thing is that it would be spending time on something not needed to be spent on.

But for fun, not politics it could be a good time.

35. I'm in. It's brilliant. Colbert should satirize Beck's use of MLK by using Beck the same way;
"We are gathered here today to commemorate an event so historical. An event held to honor the dream of one great man... Glenn Beck."

His turn out would absolutely dwarf Beck's.

47. I think satire is the only way to expose this Beck bullshit and the whole crazy
Teabagger paradigm. Let's face it, they don't seem to listen to reason and the research has shown that people tend to ignore facts they don't like. Maybe a little absurdity will open some eyes. As well as be fun for those of us who are feeling pretty beaten down by the endless supply of RW horseshit were being buried under.

Think of all the resources being squandered to support the RW agenda. I guarantee it's a lot more than this will use.

71. You miss what Glenn did.
Edited on Wed Sep-01-10 03:48 AM by RandomThoughts
What he said should not be mocked, that is why he said what he did.

When he was at that convention he was in better ideas, not hate. Although he probably had some of his bias in the thoughts also.

Although if he uses it to support other ideas, then that is bad.

So it would not be a paradoy of Beck, but just another rally inspired by Beck, not to ridicule him. Just to have fun.

Any ridicule of that gathering is bad in many ways, since he did ok at the rally.

So it should not be about Beck, but more about anything else, and even being nice to him by saying inspired by him, would be a good thing.

Some comedy on many topics, and commentary on many issues would be great, that could have a skit about Beck, but not the whole thing about Beck.

Does that make sense, and really not even sure if it is a good idea, but would be funny, and if done just to mock Beck would be mean spirited, and not motivational or inspirational.

in 2005. 250,000 people showed up for that.

I would go to DC for that and spare no expense.

86. BE PROGRESSIVE and BE PROUD. LET THEM SEE THAT!
They don't get satire; they are missing a part of their brains. They would think it's more support. Many people would be confused, and take the wrong message. If you can go to a rally, go to the AFL-CIO. What's needed is a massive rally with the REAL, CLEAR message. No satire. Facts. Signs. Satire would be a waste. Too many people don't get it. Focus on progressive with a message and drive it home. This ain't the time for laughs at this scale. This ain't the time to pretend to be what you're not.

87. I don't think we can compete for the dumb ass vote. If you don't understand
Satire and irony, you're probably a lost cause. I think there are a lot of people sitting on the sidelines these days, turned off by the ugliness and stupidity of much of political discourse. They aren't stupid and something like this might be the best way to reach them.

Yes, the teabag morons might misread it as support for them. Who cares? We won't be reaching THEM anyway.

103. why not directly counter the message
Look the awesome interview videos of rally members gently being told facts. Many, especially older people, do not argue, they are confused and start to doubt. Who says you can't change a tea party member's mind? Why give up? Go for the base! While there are plenty of dumb asses, there are plenty who are just angry and grabbed on to the short, often repeated messges, and lies presented as simpe facts. So counter with a message that's clear. Lots of people, especially older, don't get satire. Look at today's video of Cenk confronting the republican on social security. No mistake can be made understanding that! Hammer the facts, make it direct and clear. Why carry signs counter to your belief as a joke? Why give the opportunity for the message to be distorted by any media? Everyone is the target audience. There are many people who could go either way. Some are missing that brain part - they will get the wrong info. I wouldn't risk that - the stakes are too high. Have a party, show up at events in groups like the awesome "millionaires", but a big event should be something everyone can understand. It should be to change minds and unite progressives.
I love Colbert! I just think this idea is not what is needed right now.

105. Because it doesn't work
We're never going to win these people over. It's simply not going to happen. We might get a few of them to wake up, but the majority has no intention of doing so.

This isn't at its heart about winning a political argument. It's about pointing out that the argument is silly itself.

So it could still be dangerous for minorities to attend.

It's not as funny if they don't get the joke.... just my opinion, of course.

And it's interesting to see so many who bash Pres. Obama on a regular basis sign on to THIS as "the most brilliant idea EVER!!!111"

Policy until we're blue in the face and reach NOONE. I seriously doubt that the diehard tea baggers would show up at this event. They are not interested in anything that's not about God, Guns, and Gays and how the evil progressives are ruining THEIR country. This won't be vitriolic enough for them. Where's the fear?
