Same-Sex Marriage Becoming Conservative Cause
hostility between the social conservative element of the party and those less adherent to that doctrine is already palpable

1. I've seen that. A very conservative friend of mine keeps getting kicked out of
conservative organizations, like the September 12thers, or whatever they are called, for supporting gay marriage. He's religious (or pretends to be) and partisan all the way down, but he's got a libertarian streak which says government should be even-handed. He says there are a lot like him. He's actually in favor of building the "mosque," too, even though he's pretty racist on a lot of issues. He's basically the type who assumes his white straightness makes him superior to everyone else, but he still thinks people have the right to be equally inferior to him. :)

2. Theocrats and real Libertarians
Theocrats and real Libertarians just can't play well together for an extended period of time.

3. That tension has been there since the 1960's
And it's not just the theocrats but the social conservatives in general. They keep papering it over but at some point it's going to pop.

Even now, some of the Ron Paul people are starting to suggest their "revolution" got hijacked by the corporatists and turned into the Tea Parties.
