Mormon Church-owned Deseret News cuts 43% of news staff
Source: Salt Lake Tribune

Deseret News CEO Clark Gilbert said today that the newspaper was cutting almost half of its newsroom staff as it deals with a revolution in how consumers get news at the same time advertising revenues have declined.

At a staff meeting this morning, Gilbert told employees the newspaper will consolidate operations with KSL in the fall and that Editor Joe Cannon and Publisher Jim Wall are leaving their positions for advisory roles.

The changes amount to 57 full-time and 28 part-time employees, or about 43 percent of the paper’s news staff.

After the meeting, staffers were being called in to one-on-ones with management to learn their fates.

1. Ee-yew! Thought leaders????
The paper has put together a new editorial advisory board consisting of “thought leaders” from across the U.S., who will serve a sounding board for editors and will be encouraged to write opinion pieces.

Sounds like more Fox.

2. I don't guess it ever occurred to them that if they didn't have
such positions as, "thought leaders," that maybe their reporters would cover issues that are important to the average citizen - you know like budgets and taxes, rather than LoHiLadyGaGa?

4. And it's ironic how thought leaders are dependent upon the support of non-thinkers!!!!
