Focus On The Family: Anti-Bullying Efforts Are A Gay Front
Focus on the Family has a message for gay rights activists: stay off the playground.

Candi Cushman, an education analyst for the James Dobson-founded group, told The Denver Post this weekend that gay rights advocates have inserted their agenda into anti-bullying efforts, at the expense of Christian values.

"We feel more and more that activists are being deceptive in using anti-bullying rhetoric to introduce their viewpoints, while the viewpoint of Christian students and parents are increasingly belittled," Cushman told the Post.

In an email to TPM, Cushman expanded her argument. "Listing certain categories creates a system ripe for reverse discrimination, sending the message that certain characteristics are more worthy of protection than others," she said.

5. I suppose because bullying tends to be targetted at
gays, lesibans and trasngendered kids. I know this from experience at my daughter's school, where one of her friends (who is transgendered) was driven out of the school by harassment from students and harassing lawsuits from a "Christian" organization.

8. As the mother of a son who was bullied
and who was not gay, lesbian, or transgendered, I think it's dangerous to claim that those groups are the only ones bullied, or even the main ones bullied.

Any kid who is perceived as weaker and more vulnerable is subject to bullying. It's really important NOT to let the bullying issue become one of protecting certain groups only. All bullying is wrong. It doesn't matter who is doing it or who the target is.

11. Agreed, and I did not intend to imply that others are not
bullied, just that this pattern might explain the focus on this issue by this particular group. I suppose it could also be related to appropriate "masculine" roles.

15. Others are sometimes bullied by being labeled "gay"
even if they are not. "Gay" is used by kids as a term of slander. I hate that. That is why gay pride is important.

We had a kid here who was bullied to death. He committed suicide because of the bullying. This was a couple of years before the Irish girl committed suicide. Boys from supposedly good families called him gay, among other things. My husband served on the coroner's jury that investigated his suicide. It was tough for him because our oldest daughter is bisexual.

There was plenty of evidence of the bullying. The police have the texts and emails sent to the kid. I heard that the family was planning to sue, but it has dropped out of the news.

Many people supported this boy's family. But it was too late.

This sort of thing muddles the issue. Bullying is bullying, whether or not someone is gay. If the religious right can't get behind the anti-bullying issue, for gays and anyone else who is bullied, then they need to shut up.

4. Yes, and laws against killing gay people are just a front to really let them get married.
These people are very stupid.

Kids with disabilities know a thing or two about bullying, too. In fact, anti-bullying legislation passed the NC House by a single vote, thanks to a partnership between special ed advocates and Equality NC.

In other words, anti-bullying efforts are really a front for the disabled agenda. :sarcasm:

12. Focus on the Family supports bullying of gay kids
And they and the other hateful bigots will do their best to make sure things in schools will be bad enough that some of those little faggots and dykes will ultimately commit suicide.

Imagine tolerating bullying of kids. Every day, I hate these bigots more and more. I wish they would all die off.

14. So, gay bashing is a "Christian value"?
Whatever happened to "love the sinner, hate the sin"?
