Can we cut the defense budget in half and increase taxes?
So if the United States is so much in debt with trillions of dollars and running up more huge debts year after year, what if we slashed the defense budget and then raised taxes on everyone, and maybe we can dig out of this hole we have borrowed ourselves into. I think cuts will have to be across the board, and social programs as well. But put most of the pressure on the defense budget and other non-essential things, such as foreign aid money, before cutting the social programs, let those have small cuts.

Put the top tax rate at 50% and it starts at 250,000 a year. At a million dollars or more a year, it goes to 70% tax rate, the top rate. The other tax rates for all income levels would rise too, all across the board. I bet the debt would shrink dramatically after a few years of this kind of action.

1. Cut the Defense budget in half, put the wars on what's left, and hold taxes like they are.

2. cutting the defense budget by 50% puts zillions out of work
not just soldiers, but defense contractors, tattoo artists, strippers. all the down the food chain. ready to put them all on the dole?

without war or the threat of it, this economy crumbles.

but it would balance the sacred deficit post haste!

3. We certainly could. We won't, though.
Our government is incapable of doing anything
that would go against the wishes of its owners
(and that ain't us).

4. If we cut the war budget in half we don't have to raise taxes.
That would put nearly 500B off the budget.
