& if the WH won't fire him, it's time for House to REPEAL RULE requiring a NO-AMENDMENT VOTE by

.... January 11, 2011 by the lame duck Congress. This rule was embedded into the war funding bill and passed into law in July.

Perhaps, last July, it may not have then been clear to Speaker Pelosi that the Simpson Bowles Commission was run by people who consider Americans whose lifetime payroll & self-employment contributions have created trust fund surpluses of $2.5 trillion, loaned to the Treasury as bonds secured by the good faith & credit of the United States government, are feeding from the PUBLIC "TIT", and deserve no more than to have their bonds defaulted and benefits gutted.

But it should now be clear to all that Alan Simpson's gang of thieves intend, rather than to address the actual causes of the deficits (tax cuts for the rich in the face of unfunded wars and corporate welfare), but by legitimizing and formalizing the permanent theft of funds paid for the specific purpose of funding Americans retirement.

Alan Simpson is not telling the Chinese holders of U.S. government bonds that "The money's been spent. You'll have to take less than we promised."........ He's only telling that to Americans who have paid $2.5 trillion in surplus Social Security contributions, and who have loaned that to the U. S. Treasury in good faith......Americans he now characterizes as feeding from the public "tit".

It is now clear that a commission intent on defaulting on Social Security is not fit to be the beneficiary of a special, undemocratic rule requiring a NO-AMENDMENT, up-or-down vote by a lame duck Congress.

This rule, surreptitiously enacted into law in July, SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY REPEALED.

It is not proper that Congress should abdicate their responsibilities by delegating the gutting of Social Security to a commission whose members view it as favors to be handed out rather than benefits due those who have paid $2.5 trillion in surplus contributions toward their retirement security.

The time to repeal this rule is NOW, before the November elections, before the lame duck session.

Speaker Pelosi has the opportunity and the duty to re-affirm Congress's responsibility over these issues.

The American people need to know they can vote in November for a party that will defend our values and fundamental obligations, not a party that will weasel out of it responsibilities and let an undemocratic commission steal our SS.

....sneaked language into the rule that the House is voting on tonight regarding war funding.

Embedded in the rule is the requirement that the House will vote on the deficit commission’s recommendations in the lame duck session if they pass the Senate.

The commission, co-chaired by Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, is packed with members who favor the raising the retirement age to 70, means testing, and private accounts. Many also support investing 20% of the Social Security trust fund in the stock market.

...The rule is only good for the 111th Congress — it expires Jan 5, 2011, so a lame duck Congress would have to vote on it.

Calls For Alan Simpson's Resignation From Debt Commission After "310 Million Tits" Insult

14. It's pretty obvious to all of us who have been
following the Fiscal Commission slowly, that this group of weasels (except Jan Schakwosky and Javier Becerra) was destined to produce some pretty draconian cuts to Social Security masked in the higher calling to reduce deficits. Alan Simpson's appointment is VERY disheartening to Obama supporters who once thought a Democrat could never be behind Social Security cuts. Interestingly enough, Pelosi put Schakowsky and Becerra on this commission, the only 2 who speak adamantly against SS cuts, so I am pretty sure she shares their views. Pelosi has said several times that she will not raise the retirement age and the other more insidious cuts that Obama has yet to give a position on. Pelosi has also said SS and the deficit are two different things (apples to oranges)I think most people realize at this point, privatization is the straw man in this battle.

Maybe her willingness to vote on the commission is her confidence Democrats will vote against SS cuts. I am still trying to figure out how all of this will play out. Will the Senate vote on the commission's suggestions? Harry Reid (not thrilled about him) is an outspoken advocate of SS and hopefully will have some sort of pull with Senate Dems. At this point, asinine comments by Simpson can only help SS advocates. His outbursts are great because many pple not wrapped up in DC politics have even heard of this commission, or have any idea what the potential damage could be. Bruce Webb, Angry Bear Blog, brought up a great point recently that this commission is supposed to reduce short term deficit, not long term, therefore any cuts to SS would happent to current beneficiaries (very, very unpopular stance few pols would be willing to take).

As James Galbraith and Paul Krugman have pointed out, once they went after Social Security the whole Commission became illegitimate.

And they should deal with this BEFORE the election, we know what they are up to and we should let them know.

Excellent OP. Thank you for posting.

32. Yeah, this is practical an should have been going on before the latest outburst.
The problem is they don't need an whole lot of Democratic votes if the Republicans feel they can make the Democrats take most of the heat, which they can.

They probably need 25 in the Senate for a up and down and there are enough blue dogs in the House to pass almost anything they and the Republicans can agree on, which is well more than I can stomach.

Every vote could be critical, so shaking up the ones likely to get behind whatever the administration sells is the most important ones to yank in line. We can't afford that large a chunk of rubberstamps or worse comes to worse we won't even be able to cast blame that the pukes voted for it and we just had a bi-partisan study of the grave deficit and blah, blah, blah.

We don't get middle of the caucus Democrats in gear and we don't even get a fig leaf much less stop this travesty.

Working on the conservatives is more difficult but some of them probably have to be split off to be sure to fend this off. I bet their are at least 14 Democratic Senators that are heavily inclined to vote aye on any deficit reduction measure and that is already a precarious point.

68. No off color comment from a committee member is going to stop them from their goal
of cutting Social Security and Medicare. I would fathom that this plan has been in the works for a very long time. They are much to close to seeing their efforts come to fruition to stop because someone foolishly let the cat out of the bag.

72. Anytime the government creates a commission
of establishment "statesmen" to investigate or recommend something, you know they're either going to cover something up or loot the treasury. There is no possible third outcome.
