That idea's nuttier than Chinese chicken salad, I gotta admit, so let me explain.
Right now, there are dozens of Congressional Republicans demanding Gonzalez' head on a lance. When THAT MANY Republicans are attempting to eat one of their own, you know there's something deeper.
I want you to consider something: Gonzalez wouldn't have acted alone on this. There is no reason for him to have done so. He doesn't care who the US Attorney for Arkansas is, or whether Carol Lam is the US Attorney or the Former Fired In Disgrace US Attorney. The only way Gonzalez remains in federal service after 1/20/2009 will be as a cook in a federal penitentiary. Everyone knows this, including Gonzalez. Remember, he's a Republican; a Republican won't walk across the street of his own volition unless there's something in it for him.
There are three people for whom there's a lot at stake here: Bush, Cheney and Rove. One of those three--probably Rove, but I wouldn't put it past either of the others--HAD Gonzalez do this. Gonzalez falling on his sword will transfer all the blame to him. The blame needs to be dumped on whoever's idea it was to do this.
Gonzalez should eventually be separated from executive service because of the torture memos, but until we know who put him up to firing the attorneys he needs to stay on the job.
