1. Yes, the crime rate in the Oval Office was way higher then than now.

3. Crime rate should be higher
Because the economy is worse. These two parameters are linked, in a negative fashion. As the economy drops, the crime rate increases. This happens in all societies. The negative economic figures lead to more unemployment amongst the young males 18 to 28, and this is the group which commits most of the crime. This is one reason why crime dropped in the USA in the 1990's, the experts show this is linked to the free availability of abortion starting in 1973, and the good economy.

4. Crime has been trending down
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 08:19 AM by Lurks Often
Despite what you might see on TV or in the newspapers, crime has been trending down. If you want to do the research, here are two links:
Dept of Justice: http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/
FBI: http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm

My personal opinion is the crime rates are cyclical and that regardless of the person and party in the White House, they have very little to do with whether crime goes up or down. That is more a function of state and local law enforcement and prosecutors, as well as societal pressures.
