What would Obama's approval rating be if he had...
Edited on Sun Aug-22-10 08:45 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
What would Obama's approval rating be if he had demanded a stimulus package three times larger, and failed, and signed what congress passed.

And demanded a scary-strong public option. And failed, and signed what congress passed.

And demanded a sweeping government re-fi program for a trillion dollars of mortgage and consumer debt... and been unable to get it through Congress?

These are not rhetorical questions. I can argue either side.

Related question: What would these mid-terms be like if that had been the case?

Carter and Clinton appeared to be hurt by failure with Congress. Since those were our only Dem presidents since color TV their examples loom large.

But what if Obama had stated up front that he was probably going to be thwarted in these initiatives?

"I am demanding this because it is right, and if Congress does not pass this the situation will get worse. Congress will probably not pass these needed initiatives because corporate influence is too entrenched in our system, but if I did not try to do what we so desperately need I would not be doing my job for you, the people."

This approach would quite possibly have made Obama an unpopular President.

Or not.

Maybe Obama would have been Carter, maybe he would have been Truman in '48.

It's a topic for discussion. Like I said, I can argue either side.

1. politics are different than they have been in the past in that the media is not an independent
entity, it s a party to the lie the corporations put forward to get what they want. they in essence try to create the reality they want. that's why you see the tea partiers all over. there aren't that many of them, but by showing them en masse they can create this illusion that there are more of them than there are and thus making the sheeple feel like maybe they should be like the tea partiers. they turn gossip into news and spread it around until people think it's true or at the very least don't know what's true and what's not.

I don't know what would have happened had obama come out and said any of those things. he didn't. and the dems handed the healthcare and stimulus bill over to the republicans before they even started. I could argue that maybe they actually thought the republicans would play the game, but then again, i could argue that some wanted to ensure that their corporate sponsors got what they wanted. like they moved the ball to the halfway mark before they started the football game.
