Poll question: Who do you want to see as the Republican candidate (of those that have a shot)?
I would personally choose Rudy - for a few reasons.

1) He's pro-choice, pro-gays, and for gun control. I know this won't help him with voters, but it also guarantees these issues can't be used by to divide the country. Abortion and hating gays are the two fall back issues that Republicans love to exploit.

2) He's a Bush guy. He supported everything Bush - especially the Iraq war. The Democrats would have no problem exploiting this issue. I can see the commercials now.

3) Other issues like multiple divorces, dressing in drag, and ties to shaddy characters are still hidden to many potential voters.

2. McCain, definitely.
Although there are others that might do more to destroy the Republican Party than McCain, he'll do.

7. I agree, that's why I limited it to those that actually could win.
Tancredo is just goofy.

8. You make a good case, epecially reason #1
Even if a Repub were to win in 2008, at least with Rudy we know that his appetites are rather prosaic and predictable -- a lust for power and money -- but I can't even imagine what weird tangents a McCain presidency would go off on. Rudy would just play the capo di tutti capi while McCain could become another capo di tutti-frutti.

10. Mitt!!!
I just posted this in another thread...

Mitt doesn't have mythical "hero" or "maverick" status like Dame Rudy and McCain.
He would lose his homestate.
I see no evidence of any independent appeal
He has flip flopped on every position he has taken
The right doesn't like him (unlike F Thompson and others)
Like Hillary, he raised a ton of money in the 1st quarter, but had much fewer donors than other candidates.
His religion is going to cost him some votes. There has already been a semi-prominent evangelical to say that a vote for Romney is a vote for satan.

From Rasmussen...
Romney (29%) Edwards (55%)
Romney (37%) Obama (52%)
Romney (41%) Clinton (50%) <= Only, if we nominate a weak general election candidate like Hillary, I could see Romney doing well.
Romney (34%) Richardson (42%) <=Richardson is probably LESS known that Romney and still beats him.

Other than that, I pick Newt. He is one of the few candidates that has higher unfavorables and more people committed to voting against him the Hillary.

11. Anyone BUT Thompson.
Thompson will ensure we don't flip any red states. He's VERY popular amongst the white male swing voters in the South and mid-West and we need those folks to vote for the Dem instead.
