Yep, just what I expected when I came here -- just like every other time
I hate when RWers we despise die. I avoided checking in here because I knew it would be just like every other time.

In one camp, we have the "may the person rot in hell, glad he's dead, would love to piss on his grave." In the other, we have the "we're better than that, kumbayah, let's all hold hands."

So I have a proposal, the next time a despicable RWer dies, we have two threads. One for spitting on the grave before the body's even cold, and one for peace and compassion -- and may the two never meet.

1. Brilliant!
That would probably work better than barfing out random threads of both varieties all over the place (if everyone agrees to it, of course).

2. Best idea I've heard all day...
Today, for the first time in my existence here at DU, I used the "hide thread" function...

3. "peace and compassion"
If you look around, you'll find dozens of threads like this for him.

Just sayin'.

7. Yes, there are
and they are fighting with the people calling him despicable scum and vice versa. I'm just saying we divide the sides and keep them from clubbing eachother.

16. "Go to your corners" kinda defeats the whole point of DU, IMHO.
If we Democrats can't even thrash out our differences with each other, how in the world can we expect to thrash it out with the likes of "The Moral Majority"?

4. I can understand your anger...
But if one of us died, a gay, a minority, someone poor....What would Jerry's reaction be....I am just betting it would be the same as his response to 9/11.

I feel nothing for his loss...not gleeful...not angry...I would like to think of him as a comma during our lifetime....

He was a hateful, bigoted man and he neither deserves our sympathy or respect. He spent his life first fighting segregation and then hating gays, women, liberals and everyone else he could lump in.

In 1965, he gave a sermon at his Thomas Road Baptist Church criticizing Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement, which he sometimes referred to as the "Civil Wrongs Movement". On his Evangelist program The Old-Time Gospel Hour in the mid 1960s, he regularly featured segregationist politicians like Lester Maddox and George Wallace.<14> He often spoke out in favor of the racist position in those days. For example, in 1958, he said:

If Chief Justice Warren and his associates had known God’s word and had desired to do the Lord’s will, I am quite confident that the 1954 decision would never have been made…. The facilities should be separate. When God has drawn a line of distinction, we should not attempt to cross that line.”

6. I think you missed my point entirely
I've been here like forever, and the reaction to someone's death like that of Falwell always has the same predictable reaction. People defend their righteous glee that that person can no longer do any harm, while others insist that as Dems and Progressives, we should hold ourselves to a higher standard as hate only generates more hate.

The forum bubbles up until it's about to explode as both sides make their arguments. Then, inevitably, someone puts their fingers in their ears and posts that can't we all please stop the racket.

I'm not saying either side is right or wrong. It's just an observation on the dynamics of this forum.

8. Oh..you do have a point...
There is a tendency to do that....

But I suppose we should be grateful that we have a forum where like and similar minds can express their thoughts.....but the other thing is we are talking to each other....sometimes screaming...but we are talking...

:hi:

9. And a thread for all the compassion and hand-wringing when
people like Zarqawi and Hussein died.

Sometimes the irony is just too much around here, and you have to check out for a while. Let the fringe have their tantrums. :)

10. Wow, I must have missed that
Perhaps people were questioning foreign policy decisions or questioning the implications for international relations or simply don't believe in the death penalty or how it is carried out.

Where were the threads full of hand-wringing and compassion?

just so we can express our ambivalence without harsh judgments made against us.

Edited on Wed May-16-07 05:15 PM by uppityperson
How about all of us in the middle? Those NOT advocating kumbahya or any sort of compassion, but also not spitting or dancing? I guess those of us in that group should just avoid DU during those times? Edited to add that there are shades of grey (gray?)

19. I'm not spitting on anyone's grave
As a victim of Falwell's hate, I have a right to NOT mourn his passing. He was hateful and evil and as bad as anyone who sat at Nuremberg.
