I'm not even a Christian, and I'm offended.
Edited on Tue May-15-07 11:01 PM by Redstone
I'm offended that someone would spew venomous messages of hatred and intolerance (in direct contradiction to Christ's teachings of love and tolerance), and profit mightily by doing so.

I'm offended that so many misguided, ignorant Americans are so misguided and ignorant that they really THINK that Christ's message was "Hate the fags. Keep the niggers down. Beat the single mothers senseless, as if their lives aren't hard enough already. And while we're at it, let's demonize everyone who calls God Allah."

I guess that Falwell's followers have never actually READ the Bible, have they? Because if they had, they'd have found that Christ taught four precepts: Faith, love, tolerance, and charity.

NOT hate.

Although the Big Guy did have a bit of a temper, and woe betide any who tested his limits: Remember the money changers in the Temple?

Did His hand maybe reach into a hardened heart today, and give it a little squeeze? If so, be on notice, Pat Robertson and Fred Phelps, and all you others who deliver messages of hatred in the name of Christ: He just MIGHT be back, and He might not be happy with you and the hatred you've tried to spread in His name.

I'm going to bed now; discuss at will, and I'll be very interested in reading your comments when I get up tomorrow.

5. All I can say is, Falwell is very fortunate that the god he exploited for so long
doesn't actually exist. If there were a hell, he'd be in it.

7. I have a copy of the Duty Roster at the Pearly Gates
The watchbill for today says that Malcolm X, Rock Hudson, and Ingrid Bergman have the duty.

Wonder which one of them told the baastid to step over to the elevator and push the button that says 'sub basement?'

10. I live within 40 miles of Liberty University....
and the local news stories on Falwell's death are obnoxious. I am a Christian and Falwell offended me and quite frankly embarrassed me.

I quit going to church when the church got involved in politics. The church was given a very simple message of love one another, help the sick, the poor and the widowed and preach the good news....the good news being GRACE. I have long advocated revoking the tax free status of religious organizations since they have abandoned the message and commission and become engaged in empire building, millionaire making and politics.

I won't applaud Falwell's death or dance on his grave but I can't say I will miss his message and influence in the area, but I'm sure his son will take it up and it will continue. All his death has accomplished is to substitute the son for his dad.

14. Uh, no, not being deceitful, much as you might like for it to be so.
Sorry to disappoint you.

You've made it very clear that you don't like me (and that's OK with me), but it's no excuse to attempt to put words in my mouth. Is it?

A pretty weak effort. I'll expect better from you next time around.

23. I believe we have, and our conversations consisted of of attacks on me, no matter my
possition on no matter the subject. And if you've forgotten that, you have an even worse memory than I have, and my memory is legendarily bad.

I am at peace with the fact that if you respond to one of my posts, it will be with hostility, no matter the subject or content of my post. As your responses have always been. Some things just ARE, and try as we might to change them, it would be wasted effort.

So be it.

13. This is interesting, Redstone. I just took in a BookTV segment
where the author pointed out that these nutcases DON'T read the Bible. Instead, they have a "relationship" with Jesus.

So, no, they don't know what's in the Bible. They can't name the first book and have no idea what Jesus said as it is recorded and can't even identify that his parables are in the New Testament. They can't name more than one of the gospels. In other words, that whole Bible thing isn't happening except as a "belief".

:wow:

15. Now that is something that explains the popularity of people like Falwell, indeed.
Typical Americanism, yes? Only look at the superficial surface of a subject, just sit there and let someone else TELL you what to think, because that is so much easier than READING A BOOK and forming your own opinion.

Isn't it? It's just the American Way.

Mark Twain

"His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork."
Mae West

"Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go."
Oscar Wilde

"I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure."

Edited to say... literary greats... well, except for Mae... I just love her, that's all.

28. Agreed. As I said, you don't have to be a Christian to be offended by the way that SOB
lived and spewed his venom upon all and sundry who did not conform to his "vision."

Thanks for the support from your athiest viewpoint. As an Agnostic, I appriciate thoughtful commentary from all sides.

But I'd say he's got a great deal of hatred he'll need to part with in order to do that. And I do wonder if he would be able to let that go.
