America Today: An Unemployed Mother Kills Her Kids
Mother Killed 2 Children, Police Say
By ROBBIE BROWN
Published: August 17, 2010

A financially desperate woman in South Carolina has confessed to smothering her two children with her bare hands and driving their bodies into a river, the police said on Tuesday morning.

The woman, Shaquan Duley, 29, admitted to killing her 2-year-old and 18-month-old sons after the police pulled her submerged car from a river in Orangeburg, S.C., and discovered their bodies, according to Larry Williams, the county sheriff.

"The statement was made by the mother that she had suffocated the children," Sheriff Williams said at a press conference. "She was a mother that was unemployed. She had no way of taking care of her children."

Ms. Duley will be formally charged with murder on Wednesday, the police said.

1. selfish nasty woman
""She was fed up with her mother telling her that she couldn’t take care of the children or wasn’t taking care of the children," Sheriff Williams said. "She just wanted to be free."

Really, so you kill helpless baby and toddler...enjoy rotting in prison...

I don't care how financially strapped you are, there are government and private services that could have taken those kids in. I hope this woman rots in hell.

To attribute this to America or the financial situation is ridiculous. Either this woman is mentally ill or pure evil (a la Diane Downs).

Maybe I misunderstood the title of this thread. I thought it implied that she was driven to kill her children by circumstances found in "America today."

5. The relevant parts of the story:
A financially desperate woman in South Carolina has confessed to smothering her two children with her bare hands and driving their bodies into a river, the police said on Tuesday morning.

"The statement was made by the mother that she had suffocated the children," Sheriff Williams said at a press conference. "She was a mother that was unemployed. She had no way of taking care of her children."

He financial status should have no bearing on what she did.

7. If you're sane, you give your children up to child services. You don't murder them.
So, she's either insane or she's a cold-blooded killer.

35. You mean I can't sing this anymore?
When I woke up this morning, things were lookin' bad
Seem like total silence was the only friend I had
Bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down... and won
And it was twelve o'clock before I realized
That I was havin' .. no fun

Chorus:
But fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun

Last time I checked my bankroll,
It was gettin' thin
Sometimes it seems like the bottom
Is the only place I've been
I Chased a rainbow down a one-way street... dead end
And all my friends turned out to be insurance salesmen

Repeat Chorus:

Well, I sat down in my closet with all my overalls
Tryin' to get away
From all the ears inside my walls
I dreamed the police heard
Everything I thought... what then?
Well I went to court
And the judge's name was Hoffman

Ah but fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun
Well done, hot dog bun, my sister's a nun

Well, damn. That's my favorite song about "the man." And about oatmeal and illegal smiles.

37. Ah, Sam Stone. Another favorite.
Edited on Wed Aug-18-10 10:17 AM by DevonRex
:hi:

Sam Stone came home,
To the wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knees.
But the morhpine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And soon he took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold roared through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon,
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
Well, he played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose hovering in the air.
But life had lost it's fun,
There was nothing to be done,
But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill,
For a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

39. Well, that's really the saddest thing about mental illness...
it precludes/prevents rational thinking.

It's really a shame the way the media are reporting on this, saying that she "showed no remorse".

Well...yeah. No remorse. No sadness. And, if she's suffering from severe depression, no happiness either.

In fact, nothing.

anyone who's been severely depressed knows it's like being dead.

I know it's a stretch for me to assume that she's depressed, but like you said, she's either insane (or depressed)...or she is a stone-cold killer. I would rather give her the benefit of the doubt (if there is one) and assume she didn't murder her kids because they might have been inconvenient or something....

a statement that the bad economy and Obama caused this.

This lady is crazy. Anyone who kills their kids is crazy and is not a reflection on the economy.

This woman is mentally ill to do such a thing and I hope she is both punished and helped.

Except in the case of this lady, they'll put her under the jail compared to what they did to the previous woman.

28. I listened to a brief press conference earlier today...someone involved was asked
if it's possible she could have been suffering from Post Partum Depression.

The answer was, "Yes..that's possible"

While what she did was heinous, if she's proven to be suffering from PPD, I challenge anyone to make a judgment about something they've never experienced.

I had a severe case of PPD after my second child was born. Sometimes it goes outward, sometimes it gets turned inward.

It is nothing short of HELL.

I wouldn't wish it on my worst fucking enemy, and that's the truth.

It's really pretty depressing how many people judge something/someone without ALL the evidence. Or without walking a mile in that person's shoes.

38. Unemployed BUT her children attended Day Care and she only killed 2 youngest children -
- she'd had a fight with her mom and killed the children afterwards. She wasn't hurting too much for money if she could pay to pawn her kids off to daycare when she didn't have a job.

No sympathy here. Another Susan Smith, she didn't want to be tied down with young children.
