Lakota budget cuts will hit students across board
<skip>

When students go to the school's media center they may not find anyone with specialized library training as aides will be filling in for media specialists. Kindergarten students won't get physical education, art and music instruction from teachers specifically certified in those areas.

Students who get sick in school may not be helped by a registered nurse because some school nurse positions were among those eliminated.

More than 500 children are losing their bus rides in a district that just a few years ago prided itself on having a bus seat for every child. The move will allow the elimination of 10 bus routes, from 198 to 188. That's in addition to 23 routes cut for the 2009-10 school year, Passarge said.

"We're one of the area's leanest school districts and we offer a good value to residents, but we are a district on the brink," Taylor said.

1. Those are the same cuts that our district has instituted over the past few years.
Teachers who retire are not being replaced. Instead of a nurse in every building, we have one school nurse overseeing the entire district (in violation of the School Code, btw) and part-time nurse's aides. Same thing with Library. And only full-day kindergarten gets art, PE, and music. Half-day, too bad.

I don't think buses have been cut yet, but our bus drivers were replaced by an outside contractor a few years ago.

However, our tech director and football coach are paid more than most teachers. :eyes:
