Lynchburg, Va. -- Over the years, as Margaret Durbin watched the Rev. Jerry Falwell on "The Old-Time Gospel Hour," she began to view him as "the one televangelist you could trust and believe in."
Captivated by Falwell's unflagging optimism and assurances, Mrs. Durbin and her husband, retirees in Dallas, invested $ 10,000 in his ministry.
They never suspected it was in trouble.
They did not know that Falwell's Liberty University was falling $ 73 million in debt, that "The Old-Time Gospel Hour" would soon be $ 16 million in the red, or that the deed to his Thomas Road Baptist Church would be in the hands of the federal government.
Or that in 1989, the same year the Durbins made their investment, Falwell would disband the Moral Majority, the political organization with which he had tried to dominate the national agenda, and shut down his national television network. In the blink of an eye, Falwell had gone from a central figure on the nation's stage to a bit player, burdened by enormous problems.
