Captured: America in Color from 1939-1943
Edited on Sun Aug-15-10 06:01 AM by dipsydoodle
These images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, are some of the only color photographs taken of the effects of the Depression on America’s rural and small town populations. The photographs are the property of the Library of Congress and were included in a 2006 exhibit Bound for Glory: America in Color.

Not sure how to post some pics but all worth a look.

2. Posting some pics is much appreciated.
I'd found the link on FB from a Rockabilly friend here in the UK - that crowd are into dressing in those styles more or less. The guy to the immediate left of the dog, with the brown gad jacket, looks like the twin of one of my others pals. :)

3. A few comments:
Stunning how POOR some of the people look... poverty that most people in the United States will never see.

Dig the homemade clothes.

Why are half of the black people captioned "African-American?" Like, dude, I think we could have figured that one out.

Finally, Shasta Dam. (My mom went down to the Damburger for lunch today. Motto: "Best hamburger by a dam site." :P )

6. Remarkable...
The vast number of these were taken just a few years prior to my birth...I recall some areas of upper Bucks County, PA in the mid-50's looking a lot like some of these pics...the homes across the street from where I lived in New Hope, PA in the 60's did not have 'indoor plumbing' and very much resembled some of the residential structures seen here.

9. They're all pure magic
I much prefer stills to video especially high quality pics like those that have captured moments in time so beautifully.

12. K&R. Wow! These are just spectacular!
Some of them are very sad, no big surprise, considering the times. But we are so fortunate to have them. They really do capture history... I love seeing the small children and the old cars... Thanks so much for posting! :applause: :hi:

Here are a couple of my favorites:

Shepherd and his dog (and horse), Montana, 1942:

And this one, Louisiana, 1940, reminds me of Winslow Homer...

17. Freakin beautiful. I love them. So real. I am so sick of looking at those
damn black and white photos. I mean, the color was there, let us look at it.
Some people think b&w is all artsy craftsy and all. I hate it.
It was a technical difficulty, a technicality that was not solved, a flaw, something that meant the photos (in b&w) didn't get it right.
Thanks for bringing these out.
