The Plot Against Seniors
Alan Grayson's diary :: ::

As you read this email, the Catfood Commission is plotting behind closed doors to find a way to force Social Security cuts on the American people. In a few months, when they come out with their cruel "recommendations," you're going to hear all over the media that we have to destroy Social Security in order to save it.

Where have I heard that before?

We've got to stop them. If enough of us speak out against Social Security cuts now, then people like me, fighting to protect Social Security, can show the media where We, The People stand on this.

That's why I've started a petition telling Congress and the President, "Don't Steal My Social Security." It tells every Federal official with a say on this that if they vote to cut Social Security, then they're going to have to find another line of work. You know that extension in unemployment benefits that we just passed? That will be for them.

Sign the petition now, and pass it along to your friends.

Firing offences... Fucking with SS, extending Bush tax cuts for the rich and bombing Iran. As far as I'm concerned any one of those is a unforgivable offence.

There are over 600 trillion dollars in out-standing derivatives. We have the world's biggest army. Just go stick up the derivatives bank. We need 13 trillion. No big deal!

2. Those derivatives you speak of are Monopoly money
They only exist on balance sheets, and if everybody doesn't back slowly away from them, they'll bring down the world economy yet again.

Phony money is what the whole economic system runs on, and it's coming back to bite us in the ass. It doesn't surprise me that the Social Security System is the next thing to feel the pinch of not being able to lead a sustainable lifestyle. Eventually, the same will be true of deficit financing.

3. Social Security is not "feeling the pinch"
as much as they would like us to believe! It won't feel any pinching at all if they would just raise the earnings cap.

6. Just this month
they started paying out more than they took in. If that happened in my personal finances, I'd describe it as a pinch.

Every time the earnings cap issue comes up, I also feel compelled to mention that it will take a bit more than that, since the maximum benefit is also tied to that earnings cap. Raise the earnings cap, and you automatically raise the amount that very-well paid people are going to be able to draw out of the system.

But, if you change the formula for the top benefit without regard to the earnings cap, then you have started to means-test Social Security (frankly, I'd say that happened when we started taxing benefits back in the 1980's) and you now give the Republicons the ammo they need to call it a welfare program.

4. Perhaps They Need To See What Trickles Down After The Slash
For example if funds are cut off in nursing homes not only would many seniors be out at the time they are most vulnerable but all those who work there could have their jobs slashed. Where THEY live, shop etc would also get slashed. Back to the seniors, this time to those who have their own home or apt. Cut their monthly income and stores get hit. Many doctors will see less of their patients. Drugstores will see less business as customers really start cutting back on their pill rations. Third scenario--some who have children may have to move in with them. More mouths to feed, less money to take care of it. Fewer happy people, more resentment from both generations. Abuse could start next.
These people who have worked much of their lives are not asking to live the lifestyle of the rich and famous. They want to exist with heat and running water. They want to be able to afford the meds that slow down pain and keep them active as possible. They are not asking for any more then the rest of the population is. We are just having the misfortune to need this money when so many others also need it for we are, for the most part baby boomers after all. It is not our fault that jobs have left this country by the thousands taking with it tax dollars that should have helped S.S. We are not at fault for living at a time when we have had a number of unjust wars/conflicts that also drained funds at a shocking rate. It is not our fault that Wall Street and it's financial playground keeps getting greedier and banks its' profits on the backs of those who can afford it least. They were the grand experts telling those soon to be retired to yank that savings out of regular banks and wheel and deal with the pros on The Street and will ill prepared when they saw their investments go swirling down the tank. Now when they need the most support they are not only getting little support, little understanding but being blamed for the entire mess.
