War in Iraq a success? Time will tell, general says
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38689850/ns/world_news-mideastn_africa/

BAGHDAD — As American troops wind up their combat role in Iraq, the top U.S. commander in Iraq said Friday that it’s not yet clear whether the war will ultimately be considered a success.

"It's still yet to be determined," Gen. Ray Odierno said.

The United States is in the midst of a troop withdrawal that will see American forces reduced to 50,000 by month's end from about 160,000 at their peak. When the drawdown is complete, America's seven-and-a-half year combat mission in Iraq will be over. The remaining troops will advise and train Iraqi security forces.

In an exclusive interview, Odierno said he was confident in the abilities of Iraqi forces, but cautious about the long-term impact of the Iraq war on the Middle East and beyond.

2. Translation: No
The simple fact that this question is still being asked means we have failed.

4. "The simple fact that this question is still being asked..."
It would be like asking Gen. MacArthur on the USS Missouri when the Japanese surrendered: General, was this war a success?

Can you imagine him answering: It's still yet to be determined...

9. Gen. Patton, you've just rolled your tanks across the German frontier, headed for Berlin
Is it too soon to call your military offensive a success?

8. Does it REALLY matter, General?
The war profiteers got their blood money.

The pallets of cash have been disbursed to whatever secret pockets they went to.

Don't try to tell us otherwise, General -- it's perfectly obvious what this "war" was all about, just like Afghanistan.

10. Success for whom?
For the USA, time will tell that it failed to do what it set out to do.

11. Well, Halliburton made a lot of money.
I wonder what other success measures the good general will want to adopt.
