Tea party groups out against net neutrality

Tea party groups out against net neutrality
By Sara Jerome - 08/13/10 05:58 AM ET

Tea party groups are staking out an anti-regulatory position in the fight over net neutrality rules for phone and cable companies.

A coalition that included 25 tea party groups sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Wednesday urging the agency not to boost its authority over broadband providers through a controversial procedure known as reclassification.

The procedure could give federal regulators the power to impose net neutrality rules, which would prevent Internet access providers from favoring some content and applications over others.

The Virginia Tea Party Patriot Federation was among the groups that signed the letter. Jamie Radtke, the group’s chairman, said interest in net neutrality is rising in the tea party movement.

“I’ve heard it talked about a lot more on conference calls I’ve been on {recently},” Radtke said. “It’s starting to get onto the radar now.”

Radke said the tea party opposition to net neutrality stems from concerns over increased government power.

3. Well, they *are* pretty much an astroturf group, aren't they? Dependable for coming
down on the wrong side of pretty much anything.

7. They are given talking points by their puppet masters on a conference call
and that's all they need to know. This is proof positive that they are a bunch of useful idiots.

They should start drinking sewer water since they are against governmental regulation. Don't want no big government telling anyone that drinking water should be clean.

9. This was predictable.
These idiots can be reliably called upon to rally against their own best interests because the corporate PR guys pulling their strings waved the boogie-man of government control in front of them.

How truly pathetic.

12. I have seen some comments against net neutrality
At first I couldn't figure out why anyone would be against net neutrality, but I guess it is the whole pro-free-market-I-want-to-think-I'm-a-libertarian view. Let the businesses do what they want. They really are a bunch of tools.

15. They've been told non-stop by right wing TV that net neutrality is censorship.
I'm just as fucking baffled by the notion as you are. I have no idea how they make that leap because they never explain it. They just repeat it over and over.

And because the average Fox news viewer thinks a landline phone you don't have to share with three other houses are cutting edge technology, it's nearly impossible to even explain the basic concept to them, much less make them understand the merits of NN.

Even most libertarians are in favor of net neutrality. They say a lot of unpopular stuff too, and realize just how easy it'd be to shut that sort of thing down unless there's some sort of a system in place to prevent it.

19. I can think of one way to wake 'em up
Some brave, intrepid soul go over to Freepland and inform them how much more often they'd have to fundraise to keep the lights on when they have to pay for "preferred" bandwidth (or get the speed of a 14.4 modem on all connections.)

Oh, and I call "not it."
