American flagpoles on cars
Since Obama was elected and the Tea Parties started, I have been seeing some people putting tiny American flag flagpoles on their cars. Prior to the election, I don't know if I recall ever seeing this. I've seen red, white and blue bumper stickers, and sometimes an American flag hung in a window, but never a flagpole.

Has anyone seen this? Did Glenn Beck suggest people start doing this a year ago? Most of the people I see doing this usually look old (in their 60s or 70s).

And we're also elitist or some shit...

23. I looked at the image info, it's linked to the Onion.
So maybe the 'artist' takes the content seriously, but probably no one else does.

28. My bad - "Kelly" is not Tim Kelly (a RW cartoonist)
Edited on Wed Aug-11-10 03:52 PM by Taverner
The Onion's "Kelly" is really Ward Sutton

And "Kelly's" cartoons are a deadpan parody of RW ones

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ward_Sutton

This is Tim Kelly, whom I was confusing with "Kelly"

35. Classic.
I thought the style looked familiar. Ward Sutton's stuff -his straightforward stuff- is great, too.

I see a lot of minivans and SUVs with mom and kids in our HOV lanes.

'Kelly' is a fiction character a la Steven Colbert lampooning RW Editorial cartoons

6. They have been around since 9/11
And also break the Flag Code. As an Ex Girl Scout, it drives me crazy to see ragged flags flapping in the rain, and I'm someone who refuses to salute the flag and pledge allegiance.

26. Me, too, Lost.
I also hate seeing people wearing the flag. It's absolutely disrespectful to have the flag rubbing your crotch - for any reason.

I can't find that picture of the old guy at the Republican Convention dressed from head to toe in flag attire while scolding some young people about their beliefs, but it would have fit perfectly here.

34. During teh late 60's and early 70's, when I was a little kid
All the "adults" freaked out if people worse the flag on ANYTHING. But, after 9/11, you were a dirty hippiue if you didn't. Fly flags at night without a spotlight, in rain, put on products to sell, slap on your car, fly tattered, etc. If they are so damned patriotic, they WOULD FOLLOW TEH FRICKING FLAG CODE! I've known it since I've been about seven-years-old.

I ahev called some people on it, and they always sputter.

9. I remember seeing a bunch of these after 9/11, and then snerking because the flags got all nasty so
quickly. That, and the fact that they were probably all made in China. USA! USA!

Ok.

Editorial cartoons are supposed to be clever. I suppose that this 'artist's' audience wouldn't get clever.

16. That cartoon does not make any sense.
Anyone driving a car with two or more people in it can use the diamond lane. There is not political test. In the cartoon, the people labeled as "folks who own their own cars" are all driving alone. Are we to assume or simply accept that people who own their cars only drive alone? Are the "folks who own their own cars" people who owe no payments on their cars? I mean, I assume that "folks who own their own cars" do not have a lien on the car, otherwise they would be "folks who have liens on their cars". Are people making payments on the cars they drive somehow different than people who own their cars outright? Are cars containing more than one person always driven by people who burn American flags? Are people who use the diamond lane driving cars that belong to other people? I see a lot of cars in the diamond lane every day. Am I to assume that only one type of person pilots all of those cars? Why does the liberal media give this person space to print this sort of crap? What kind of person would look at this sort of crap and think it is in any way funny?

17. After 9/11 it seemed that every other car on the road around here had
a miniature US flag sticking out of a window. They became tattered and grimy and the next thing you knew, we had miniature US flags sticking out of trash cans and lying in the gutters. People thought the flags made them look cool and patriotic, but they had no respect for the symbol they were using to prove their supposed patriotism.

20. I spent about 3 minutes trying to figure out if that cartoon was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek.
I think it's serious, which makes it quite possibly one of the most retarded things I've ever seen. (I'm sorry about the use of "retarded", but I'm at a loss to come up with a more appropriate adjective.)

Go there and take another 3 minutes looking at Kelly's stuff and see if you still think he's serious.
It's definitely not a "Mallard Fillmore" type of thing.

36. I admit it, I was duped.
It's not that far from the gibberish some RW cartoonists put out there. And I'm a fan of Ward Sutton's other stuff, too. Anyway, since it is a parody, it's pretty damn spot-on.

I've seen them here for years - particularly after 9/11 - but usually they're flying little "Blue Devil" flags or some such nonsense.

33. It was quite common after 9/11 and then the invasion of Iraq.
At first, when I would see a black car with the flags, my first reaction was "American embassy car."

I got over that fast, though.
