2002 GA Senate Race
I remember someone bringing it up recently about how Saxby Chambliss, a republican unseated democrat Max Cleland and how many people thought that Chambliss did something unorthodox? Does anyone here have know exactly what happened?

1. yes
Chambliss attacked Cleland as unpatriotic...a veteran who lost limbs in his services.
Chambliss is a scumfuck of the first order.

4. He played the terrorism card by airing commercials which criticized his stances on natl security
and simultaneously included images of bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

In essence, he was trying to imply that Cleland's stance on national security was weak and to the benefit of terrorism.

5. I can tell you what I believe, but I have no physical proof.
Georgia was the FIRST State to go with total touch screen voting in THAT YEAR! There were lots of problems with the voting that year like people pressing the spot beside Max's name and the vote even howed on the screen as being for Sax. Since there was/still is no way to validate what was actually recorded, all the Pubs took over that year.

I personally called the Sec. of State for several years and all she (all were women over the years) ever says is that they have total confidence in the touch screen machines.

I know I always double heck my votes on the last screen before I hit the cast you vote button, I question how many Georgians actually do. I've lived here for 11 years and by far most of the people I've met simply aren't that thorough. They press their little buttons, hit cast your vote & they're out of there, proudly wearing their little peach sticker that says "I VOTED".

6. Chambliss ran an lowdown campaign
Any other time, a candidate would have lost for running such a campaign, but it was so close to after 9/11 that a lot of people were buying into nonsense. Hopefully Chambliss does not retain his seat in 2014, if he decides to run again.

7. Further, Chambliss' campaign apparently spread a lie about how Cleland was injured in Vietnam
Edited on Mon Aug-09-10 12:18 AM by gauguin57
Folks who were involved in that nasty senate campaign have always been sure Chambliss' campaign was responsible for spreading a whisper-campaign smear story, questioning how Cleland lost his limbs. Chambliss' goons allegedly spread a story that Cleland was drunk and irresponsible with a hand grenade, and therefore wasn't really a war hero because his limbs were blown off in Vietnam through his own fault or something.

(from what a Marine who was at the scene said, the grenade fell off a private's jacket ... and the private hadn't secured the pin properly. Cleland thought the grenade had fallen off his own jacket (and he always knew his pins were secure), and picked it up and got his legs and arm shredded by the blast).

Cleland suffered from a deep depression for some time after he was smeared and defeated in that election.

Truly low-down, disgusting, pus-bucket politics. May Chambliss someday rot in hell with Lee Atwater, Karl Rove and Dick Cheney and the rest of the flag-waving Republican strategists who impugn heroes' character and belittle their sacrifice.

9. why didn't they run John Lewis against him in 2008?
Lewis is somebody who hasn't had anybody run against him in 10 years. Not only that but he too has more congressional experience than Chambliss, having been in office since 1987. Also, he is another hero having risked his life as a freedom rider. Running him would have been a good way to test the voter IQ of the voters and to detect if there was any racism left.
