From the Detroit Free Press:
James K. Robinson, a former U.S. attorney for
Michigan's Eastern District and former dean of
the Wayne State University Law School, died
Friday of gastrointestinal cancer at his vacation
home in Park City, Utah.
Mr. Robinson, who had homes in Metamora and
Washington, D.C., was 66.
When Mr. Robinson was confirmed in 1998 as
assistant attorney general in the U.S. Justice
Department, he pledged that he would "reduce
white-collar crime ... which costs Americans
billions of dollars."
Appointed by President Bill Clinton, the graduate
of Michigan State University and WSU's Law
School served in the post until 2001.
"In a life cut much too short, Jim did just about
everything," said David Foltyn, chairman of the
Detroit-based law firm Honigman Miller, where
Robinson was a partner during two stints as a
top litigator.
"A lifelong passionate liberal and Democrat, Jim
was active at every level of Democratic politics,"
Foltyn said. And yet, when he was confirmed in a
unanimous vote of the Senate Judiciary
Committee, then-Sen. Spencer Abraham, a
Michigan Republican, said at the hearing that Mr.
Robinson "has many friends who are equally
strong Republicans. All testify to Jim's fair-
mindedness.". . . .
