I didn't see no stinkin' Aurora Borealis tonight
I went into the back yard and stared for like, 20 minutes. Nuthin'.

I saw the usual.. Ursa Major and Minor, Cassiopeia and a spectacularly defined Milky Way.

But no Aurora.

I feel like I was punk'd.

1. where are you?
Here's a site to monitor: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/pmap/

and here's one for more info: http://spaceweather.com They also have aurora gallery of pictures people have uploaded, in case you don't get any lights.

Just now dark where I am. The NOAA site shows some aurora north and quite a bit east of my little bunker, but I will be up and down all night, hoping for some flash.

3. I'm at 45 degrees latitude
Far enough north to see ANYTHING happening in the northern night sky.

5. east to west? Check the site I linked to and it might help predict for you
It gets refreshed several times an hour as LOTS of satellites do polar route and transmit data. I usually run that in a browser tab on nights when we might get flash

2. You have to take all your clothes off in order to see it.
Didn't anyone tell you?

If that doesn't work, and in order to see it really, really clearly, you must smear your naked body with lard and then stand on one foot.

Some people say it's an experience you'll never forget.

4. Damn, I'm out of lard
Will vegetable shortening do? I'm dreadfully ignorant in the ways of science.

6. Only if you want to see the Keebler Elves.
Look, are you serious about amateur astronomy, or not?

It's lard, or nothing.

You just don't understand the basic underlying physical properties of pure rendered hog fat vis-a-vis rigorous observational technique.

9. I'll just have to wing it with some bacon grease
Although it'll sting like mad cooking it while naked.

Thanks for the advice!

10. I once dated a girl that had a sinkin' Aurora Borealis.
After she explained the intimate details about it and then professed her love for Richard Nixon, I took her back to the dorm and proceeded to get stoned.

13. thank you. that makes me feel better
I'm south of you, but had hoped to try to see it. Clouds got in the way. Now I know it would have been a waste of time looking. So I thank you. I feel less cheated. :)
