Damascus woman secretly marries fugitive accused of molesting her daughter

A Damascus woman secretly married a man immediately after he was charged with sexually abusing her 7-year-old daughter, then helped her new husband stay one step ahead of authorities and flee to California, police said Wednesday.

Barbara Lynn Whitehead, 41, was charged with perjury, witness-tampering and hindering prosecution.

She was arraigned Wednesday in Clackamas County Circuit Court and is being held in the Clackamas County Jail, with bail set at $150,000. She is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 11.

Police have labeled Whitehead's new husband, 47-year-old Don Edward Smock Jr., a fugitive from justice. If captured, he will face 45 felony counts of child-sex-related charges.

2. I hope she believes he's innocent.

Marrying a man you believe is being wrongly accused of molesting your daughter would be less awful than marrying a man you didn't care had been molesting your daughter. I kind of suspect it's the latter, though, sadly, from the fact that she's been charged with perjury etc too.

she's naive and believes him when he says the 45 counts are all just bogus
she's a great woman because he truly is innocent
