Brown: Court decision on gay marriage great news
By SAMANTHA YOUNG, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

(08-04) 14:25 PDT Sacramento, Calif. (AP) --

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown says a federal judge's decision to overturn California's ban on gay marriage is great news.

Brown posted the comment Wednesday on his Twitter account shortly after U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker issued his decision.

The attorney general also released an official statement through his office, reiterating his belief that Proposition 8, passed by voters in 2008, is unconstitutional.

Republican candidate Meg Whitman told reporters before the ruling that she is against gay marriage but favors civil unions. She has said she voted for Proposition 8.

Brown Issues Statement on Today's Ruling on Proposition 8
Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr.'s statement on Judge Walker's ruling on Proposition 8 today:

In striking down Proposition 8, Judge Walker came to the same conclusion I did when I declined to defend it: Proposition 8 violates the equal protection guarantee of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution by taking away the right of same-sex couples to marry, without a sufficient governmental interest.

5. It'll look like a close race, but it won't be

Democrats in California are fired up against Whitman and Fiorina and they're not feeling the love from the conservative tea baggers.

I live in the most conservative part of California and there's no enthusiasm from the conservatives here for either of them.

4. As AG, Brown now needs to have gay marriages allowed

As before after Prop. 22 was struck down in 2008.
