Littering pisses me off more now than ever.
How can anybody still litter after what has happened recently in the Gulf Coast?
I am always bothered by litter, but now more then ever I can't understand how it hasn't gotten to people that we need to stop trashing the planet.
I work in an area around the bay in burlingame and it's always had tons of litter in the area but I figured after a catastrophic man made environmental disaster I would be seeing less of it especially with that ocean right there reminding people of it,but nope no dice there has been just as much crap in the area as always.

18. Not necessarily regressive at all. Neither the poor nor the rich need
to throw their trash and debris out amongst us, and if they do, they need to be penalized.

In order to avoid what one might consider a regressive fine, all one needs to do is NOT toss their shit out the window. It isn't that hard.

21. Oh fertilizer...
No one should be littering, rich or poor. The rich cling to their money harder than most, so it would be a deterrent anyway.

Littering is foul, stupid, and vile. I don't care how much money you have, or don't have, don't be a fucking PIG!

2. Just this morning I saw some asshat throw food wrappers from his car...
As he got on the freeway. I honked, and flipped him off, and mouthed "PIG... YOU STUPID PIG!"

I'm sick of living with pigs!

4. freaking cigarette butts are my piss off
but the mickeyd bags, and the rest of it suck big time.

Face it. Many people are slobs, they live like that everyday. They have blinders to what the world looks like.

I saw a picture of a city in China and I was amazed that there wasn't a piece of trash on the ground or in the streets. Do they have magic cleaners or something?

19. I read a really neat article one time about a person who tossed his
cigarette butt out the window, it blew in the back window, and set the seat on fire.

5. i swear, someday i'm going to get out of my car, and pick up and give back
to the slob who threw it, the cigarette butt smoldering in the street.

"Here, you dropped this. I thought you might want to put it in your ash tray." :eyes:

i HATE fucking litter-pigs! even when i was a smoker, i didn't litter the butts ... (okay, maybe 5 times over several years, i wasn't perfect, but i did try very hard).

6. Our local progressive station has people call in with 'green' ideas. One guy
said he takes a couple of bags and walks along the street picking up garbage and recycling for a few blocks in each direction. I think that's a great idea. It would be wonderful if people in a neighborhood each 'adopted' a few blocks.

I don't think the pigs will ever change. If they're still doing that in 2010, there's pretty much no hope.

7. I am so with you there
Interestingly enough, one of the worst places for littering that I've ever lived is New Orleans. It's nothing for people to toss their garbage into other people's yards (or hell, even they're own) as they're walking or driving. The kicker was the time I found the remnants of a family crawfish boil just dumped out onto the sidewalk in front of an abandoned house a few doors down. (Or rather, my three dogs found it as we were on our walk.) Before I moved here, I don't think I'd seen a majority of businesses using styrofoam in almost 10 years, and I hadn't exactly been in a green mecca like Portland.

9. I understand and agree, but I've reached the point where I wonder...
if my being eco-conscious really matters anymore. What with corps like BP having carte blanche to rape the earth as they like, will my recycling some cans and bottles make much impact?

10. Cigarette butts are the very worst IMO
Smokers don't seem to even realize they are littering when they flick their butts out their car window or stomp them out on the street. Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world and it is sickening.

12. While I Certainly See Your Point...
Sometimes town policies can have unintended consequences.

I lived for a decade in a small village on the North Coast of California. At about the same time California banned smoking from bars and restaurants, the village decided to remove all outside ashtrays in an apparent attempt to "beautify" the lovely victorian coastal village.

Well...

Since you could no longer smoke in the bar which used to have ashtrays, and would dispose of the butts for you...

and because the village geniuses decided to remove all outside ashtrays...

You had two choices... 1) throw them in the town approved outside trash receptacles, which were usually filled with paper products and could easily start a fire and possible burning the entire historically important victorian town to the ground...

OR... 2) toss them in the gutter.

Gutter won, and the village was saved.

11. Years ago
there used to be public service commercials against littering which made a big impression on me as a kid. I wish they would bring back a campaign like that again. So many people are just uneducated but if there was public sentiment against it maybe they'd think twice about trashing their and others' surroundings.
