7 puppies found dead on American Airlines plane
Wednesday, August 04, 2010, 4:20 PM

FORT WORTH, Texas -- American Airlines says seven puppies died after being put on an American jet from Tulsa, Okla., to Chicago.

The airline says it contacted the shipper who put the puppies on the Tuesday morning flight and is investigating further.

Share Airline spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said Wednesday the shipper put 14 puppies aboard Flight 851 scheduled to leave Tulsa at 6:30 a.m. It was delayed an hour by weather conditions in Chicago.

Fagan says baggage handlers taking the puppies to a kennel area at O'Hare Airport grew concerned because they looked lethargic.

She says employees tried to cool down the dogs. They were taken to a vet's office, but five died initially and two others died later.

1. But someone undoubtedly needed these puppies flown in
because they couldn't find any in their own area.

3. It's too hot to fly animals.
I'm surprised AA accepted them at all. The published rules are pretty clear.

4. Think before you speak. They could very well be rescued
dogs being sent to a shelter in another part of the country. We happen to be looking at shelter dogs now and there seems to be space here in CT for dogs from all over. I asked the shelter person why so many of the dogs come from Arkansas, West Va, etc and she said that they don't get too many strays in this part of CT so they bring dogs in from other states where people are not so responsible.
Anyway, they could be puppy mill dogs or something decidedly different.

5. Most of those incoming dogs are not flown on commercial
airlines for the simple reason that shelters and rescuers can't afford that. We do relay ground transports driven by volunteers or use paid ground transports like http://www.petsllc.net/about.php.
In some cases, private pilots will fly a dog in their small aircraft.

Thanks for adopting a shelter pet. I share my life with 2 and spend some of my time trying to save others.

11. I met Kyle when he was in CT for an rescuers conference
last year . I recommended his service to someone in VT who was adopting a dog from down south. She was very pleased with the service.

8. I'm a member of pilots-n-paws
I have yet to fly a mission with them because there's a lot of volunteers in my area.

About 17 years ago, I adopted two dogs from the SPCA. One died a few months ago and the other is still going strong.

or too cold...at least that's what I heard.

Poor things.
