Almost every one of those who want the 14th Amendment gone
Edited on Wed Aug-04-10 03:10 PM by MineralMan
owes his or her citizenship to being born in the USA. How do they think they became citizens?

Morons abound!

1. Well, they would argue that most of us had at least one parent here legally.

2. That's not addressed in the 14th Amendment.
They are citizens by virtue of being born here.

3. I agree, but those against it thinks it should only apply to illegals, not everyone.

7. Also not mentioned in the 14th Amendment.
In fact, qualification for citizenship wasn't really discussed anywhere in the Constitution. It was part of common law. Only because of slavery was there a need to codify citizenship based on birth in the US. The children of citizens were citizens under common law.

Now, we have laws that define these things, but it still is true that most people owe their citizenship to birth in the USA. That is the single thing that grants them that status, and it is proven via their birth certificate.

The only document needed to demonstrate citizenship is one's birth certificate if born in the USA. Others may need other documents, but a US birth certificate proves citizenship automatically.

So, when asked to prove citizenship, almost all of those who oppose the 14th Amendment would drag out their birth certificate. It's just a funny thing to me.

If the 14th Amendment did not exist, you would have to somehow prove the citizenship of your parents. That is never required if you have a US birth certificate.

Just a quirk...

5. How do you become legal when your parents were born to parents...
who were born to parents (etc) who were from somewhere else? Wouldn't the dominoes fall against you? My 11th great grandmother was an original squatter here... she had no "papers" so wouldn't her offspring be illegal? And their offspring, and so on?

6. Yes, that would be hard to document.

4. My 11th great grandmother came here from England as a little girl...
There are hundreds of us, maybe thousands of us in my family who aren't citizens if that's the case. We were here before there was a USA, but I'm sure that doesn't count. Shoot, even the American Indians are thought to have come from somewhere else... so when they really start splitting hairs, we all need to pack our bags.

:eyes:

My head hurts now... LOL!

8. But you're only in trouble if the 14th Amendment is repealed.
Then, you're going to have to dig up records on all of your relatives to prove your citizenship. And so will all the teabaggers. Haha!

9. Thankfully...
It's been documented... but to an English woman with no papers!
