Dog chews off owner's toe -- and may have saved his life
From MSNBC:
...

The story is 4 paragraphs and if I copied any one of them it wouldn't explain the story. So I will:

1. Wife thinks husband has diabetes. Husband says he will get tested, just after he has a drink. Well, one drink turns into two and two into four and before you know it, he's passed out drunk. I think he might have a problem with drinking.

2. Family dog, for whatever reason, decides to chew off his master's big toe. Dudeman is so drunk he doesn't notice.

3. Wakes up, stares at stub where big toe was. Wife rushes him to the hospital where the find that not only is he diabetic, because of his diabetes he had an infection...(wait for it, damnit!)...in his big toe which could have killed him! After discovering this, doctors finish what the family dog started, amputating the rest of the toe.

Believe it or Not!

PB

1. Infected toe was giving out tasty vibes? Or maybe the dog just knew that was
an infected toe which had to come off. If the dog could talk maybe we would know.

4. I'm sure the dog could smell the infection
Whether dogs find infection tasty or instinctually gnaw infected body parts, I don't know, but it's not that surprising. Hell, some dogs can be drained to smell tumors. Forget a CAT scan, you need a DOG scan!

10. some results have indicated that trained dogs are more reliable
but much harder to charge for

how can you charge the same for letting a dog sniff you compared to a CAT scan?

(and yes I got the joke, CAT... DOG...)

9. I've heard that dogs can often sniff out infections, even things such as heart attacks or strokes...
before they happen. Dogs have a sense of smell 1,000x to 10,000x greater than ours, they can do some amazing things with it.

11. I heard of a cat in a nursing home that could sense when someone was dying.
And it would go and sit with the person during their final hours.

26. Amazing story about the cat
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/07/25/health/webmd/main3097899.shtml

The story says the cat went by the name 'Oscar,' but I suspect some of the nursing home residents - especially those who weren't feeling well that day, called the cat 'Getthatgoddamcatthehellawayfromme!'

18. what an odd, gross, and yet facinating story.
Who says a drinking problem can't pay off??

Dogs are awesome creatures. I wonder how long Kiko had been nipping at that toe before he had a chance to bite it off. It's a good thing the owner took his shoes off before passing out.

25. Here are a few facts that might help explain why fido
did that and owner did not feel it.

No, not the alcohol... diabetes causes nerve damage, which most likely led to this guy NOT being able to feel that toe... why he didn't know he had an infection either.

I STILL have full feeling in toes... and I still check toes regularly.

But that is just me.

And I wonder where those sugars were... oy.
