Bike agenda spins cities toward U.N. control, Maes warns
By Christopher N. Osher
The Denver Post

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes is warning voters that Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's policies, particularly his efforts to boost bike riding, are "converting Denver into a United Nations community."

"This is all very well-disguised, but it will be exposed," Maes told about 50 supporters who showed up at a campaign rally last week in Centennial.

Maes said in a later interview that he once thought the mayor's efforts to promote cycling and other environmental initiatives were harmless and well-meaning. Now he realizes "that's exactly the attitude they want you to have."

"This is bigger than it looks like on the surface, and it could threaten our personal freedoms," Maes said.

He added: "These aren't just warm, fuzzy ideas from the mayor. These are very specific strategies that are dictated to us by this United Nations program that mayors have signed on to."

1. So many Repugs have gone off the deep end...
that the deep end is now the shallow end.

2. This is rhetoric with which I'm well familiar, sad to say.
I used to live in a county in Oregon where an ordinance was passed making the U.N. illegal. Seriously, the sponsors of this insane law wanted to put signs at the county line declaring "United Nations Not Allowed", so the big tanks with the troops wearing blue helmets should just turn around and head elsewhere. Plus these folks thought all our national parks were run by the United Nations, and the rangers wore blue helmets under their ranger hats. Oh, and giant U.N. flags were waving atop the U.S. flag at the park entrances. Was awfully glad when I could move away and cross that county line for good. Maybe Maes should check in with the cities of Eugene and Portland regarding the numerous positive benefits of bike riding. And not a blue helmet in sight!

I grew up in Denver, back in saner days. I'm guessing Maes won't win, given the fact that 50 supporters showed up at his campaign rally. But these are crazy times--will keep my fingers crossed. He sounds like just what my former home state DOESN'T need!

Blessings.
