2. These charts should be tattooed on the foreheads of every Dem in Congress
They should be on billboards across the country and full page ads should be purchased in every city to show them to the public.

3.  In the absence of such legislation, the nation would have a surplus this year.
But how about the Congressional Budget Office's estimations? "The new CBO data show that changes in law enacted since January 2001 increased the deficit by $539 billion in 2005. In the absence of such legislation, the nation would have a surplus this year. Tax cuts account for almost half -- 48 percent -- of this $539 billion in increased costs." How about the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget? Their budget calculator shows that the tax cuts will cost $3.28 trillion between 2011 and 2018. How about George W. Bush's CEA chair, Greg Mankiw, who used the term "charlatans and cranks" for people who believed that "broad-based income tax cuts would have such large supply-side effects that the tax cuts would raise tax revenue." He continued: "I did not find such a claim credible, based on the available evidence. I never have, and I still don't."

10. kr bush tax cuts were a gift to the top 5%; they got the overwhelming lion's share of the benefit.
Edited on Mon Aug-02-10 07:57 PM by Hannah Bell
rescinding cuts to the top 1% alone would pay down nearly half of the social security trust fund in ten years.

14. No, I read it that way at first too. The Obama plan means $400 more in rebate
Edited on Tue Aug-03-10 05:39 AM by underpants
or in net negative (meaning they get back more than they pay) - that I am not sure about.

Under the Bush plan they have -$1,881
Under the Obama plan they would have -$2,281

a $400 difference.

Which they will surely spend into the economy.

23. Nope negative taxes.
They will pay no income taxes and then get even more back (via EFC and child tax credit).

Of course they will still pay payroll taxes so it isn't like anyone escapes "tax free".

20. The estate tax thing REALLY pisses me off.
I get so tired of the rich and privileged whining about their kids being slightly less rich and privileged when they die. Here's a quick reply I shot off in reply to someone complaining on an online article about the govt. "stealing" their money that pretty much sums up how I feel:

"The ultra rich benefit from having a great deal of control over the wages of ordinary workers, prices of our goods, numerous business related tax breaks, govt. bailouts if your business is too large to fail, increased and disproportionate influence and representation in congress, and clever financial planners and accountants who can work the system. And you people expect the ordinary American citizen to be sympathetic to your plight? Am I supposed to be sad that you have slightly less millions to pass on to your heirs? What disgusts me is that you people have nearly 50% of our congress fighting tooth and nail for you despite representing such a privileged and infinitesimally small segment of our population."

31. Good point but it isn't just money that they rich pass on
it is networking, connections, and "good schooling"

There are tons of private school kids (and some in the right public schools) here in Richmond alone you were going to
a. go to ___________ private school
b. go to ___________ UVa , Richmond, Hampden-Sydney, etc.

Do the names
James O'Keefe
Tony Hayward
Tucker Carlson
Cokie Roberts
oh and lets not forget the bluest of the blue bloods George WALKER Bush

and yes throw Al Gore in there too.

22. Thanks for that first chart. Do you know where I can get a bigger one.
I want to print it out.

99% of people come out ahead, yet ~40% of people oppose it. We need to convince people to stop carrying water for the rich.

25. Interesting numbers -
I think Obama's plan looks fine, and really earners over $1M should pay at least 1/3 of their income. If anything it is too little tax at the higher income levels.

30. Thanks for putting all the Info in a single place ...
What gets me about this crap is why are the Democrats not yelling at the top of their voices, "BY LETTING THE TAX CUTS EXPIRE, THOSE WITH INCOMES OF $1,000,000 WILL PAY ONLY $53,175.00 MORE IN TAXES THAN THEY PAID LAST YEAR ... THAT'S ON A MILLION DOLLARS OF INCOME!!!! THAT'S ON $1,000,000 IN INCOME FOLKS?!?" and better yet, "BY LETTING THE TAX CUTS EXPIRE, THOSE WITH INCOMES OF $500,000 WILL PAY ONLY $6,442.00 MORE IN TAXES THAN THEY PAID LAST YEAR ... THAT'S ON A HALF A MILLION DOLLARS OF INCOME!!!! THAT'S ON A HALF A MILLION DOLLARS OF INCOME FOLKS?!?"

We/they need to put the numbers out there, because without the number the right, with comments like "The largest tax increase in history" makes it seem like returning to the previous tax rate would be crushing.
