Dog Dumping Ground
I live in Houston, and I saw this video clip on CNN last week:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/07/15/cnnheroes.hoffman....

I could not believe this was happening to so many dogs in Houston's "Corridor of Cruelty", so I sent an e-mail to Mayor Parker to ask if she could help in any way. I received the following response, however, after reading it, I'm not exactly sure what Mayor Parker or the City of Houston is going to do to address the situation. Do any of you have any other ideas of how to end the suffering of these poor dogs living in Houston?

.....You are absolutely right that the atrocities that occur in the Corridor of Cruelty are reprehensible. The City of Houston’s direct enforcement capabilities, via BARC, unfortunately are limited due to the fact that the Corridor lies primarily outside of City limits. We do pick up a number of animals from the area, or accept them after good natured folks bring them to us, and do our best to get these poor animals as humane care as possible.

As you point out in your email, the only real long term solution to this problem is for the City of Houston to continue to work proactively with the Harris County law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute the individuals that are abusing animals. The compassionate rescue and foster organizations are not going to be able to solve this problem, although they will continue to selflessly dedicate their scarce time and resources to helping those they can.

As sad as this situation is, I am happy it received such exposure. It is precisely through increased awareness of this problem, and others like it, that will move the residents of the Houston area to not accept this type of behavior any longer.

Thank You

1. So----the people of Houston better get on the ball
Without their awareness, the dogs will continue to die. I've heard of that horrible place, The Corridor of Cruelty----unbelievable!

6. Wow, you just joined today! Again, welcome.
And yes, DU can be a very supportive place to "vent" and LEARN.

9. Imagine someone dumping such a sweet-faced fellow:

Hoffman helped give Lotto the dog a home with Joan McKinney.

8. Thanks for posting -
other areas in Texas are getting better (like San Antonio and Austin) so I'm hopeful that Houston will get there eventually. It is heartbreaking right now, I agree. We recently adopted a lab from STLRR and it's the best dog. About 5 years old and abandoned by it's owner at one of the high kill shelters. He is terrific with our young kids and just wants to chase a ball...
