6. The wealthy and connected will always find a way out.
A draft will only ensure one thing, and that is poor people will get drafted.

8. This may be his last act
because if this passes, he will be unelectable (outside of his ethical breaches).

10. not with a bang, but a whimper....although I suspect he might have some mental issues
and just isn't thinking very clearly

Of course, I have no way of proving that, but....yes, he can kiss any political future goodbye

2. Don't worry it ain't gonna happen
there is way to much money in the privatized military now, and as we all know once an industry is established it cannot be done away with.
No the next step is total privatization. And we are almost their now.

9. I'm sure there will be a work around in which
the privatized entity will receive payment, kind of like temp agencies--- They get paid $80/hr, you get paid $15.

11. I am totally against the wars, I am totally against the draft...
but if we did institute the draft, we would finally end the wars. The richest will never go to war, but many people who do not want to go will be going. And many others will be sweating it out every month. The anti-war protests will be back and will be huge.

Do I feel a draft?

12. I think we must mandate that every able-bodied American swim in the Gulf...
...so that we can get serious about cleaning up. If we all died in handgun accidents, too, you can bet we'd then come up with a sensible way to deemphasize violence and regulate ownership.

14. Having been drafted and damnd unhappy about it I have mixed
emotions about the draft.

It's not about rich/poor, it's about Everyman, or more precisely, Everyman's child.

Back in 1969 my mom was all about "killin' them comminists" until her 20 year old baby boy had to don that OD green suit. Suddenly it was all about "where's our fight in this?"

In addition short timers provide a valuable service by comming home and telling about what they did, saw, smelled and heard. They're like a million tiny Wikileaks. The smells are the worst.

The general public treats the volunteer army like it's a throwaway and they don't tell their stories enough.

18. Why joke about Germans? The US draft led to a hell of a lot of evil
I would say our activities in Vietnam and Korea, when totaled, are not one hell of a lot better than the actions of the Germans during WWII.

So America has a history of defending its homeland by attacking people halfway around the world. At least the Germans started closer to home.

19. Relax, I'm German, I just imagined myself saying it with
a German accent. At least I didn't say "Vaterland."

Anyway, the Germans have or at least had a very strong sense of duty. That is the impression I wanted to convey. I believe that is the impression the gov't will push, it may well their "jobs bill."

Btw, I don't believe the Germans were "defending" themselves from the Poles by starting WW2. Much like we are not "defending" America from the Iraqi's /Afghani's/Taliban. I also don't see any ethnic cleansing/concentration camps springing up within our borders. Last I checked, we can piss and moan about the government all we want without being sent to a work camp (at least for now, Americans are not being sent to Gitmo).
