Time and time again they prove they have zero interest in working for the American people. They cry like babies about the deficit, but won't support any alternatives offered by the Dems to reduce it. They stomp their feet about paying for programs, but thumb their noses at pay-as-you-go. However, they fully support cutting food stamps, keep people from getting unemployment, and denying health care to whoever might need it.
The Democratic Party isn't perfect. It never has been. It's a big tent party with a lot of competing interests. There will always be those conservative Dems who drive us batshit crazy. Obama is the president I support despite the fact he doesn't do everything that I want. I didn't vote for him to do everything I want. I voted for him becaue he was the best person for the job and the alternative was unthinkable.
When I look back to the bush administration and the hell they put this country through, I know there is no way in hell I will ever vote for a republican again. Even the newest republicans who weren't in office in those days still support those policies. Not only that, the repubs slam the very people who need help the most. The unemployed are called lazy and unwilling to get a job because of that $350 weekly check. They consider atheists and muslims to be unworthy of being Americans. They'll tell this to their Teabagging supporters, but then lament at being supposedly "taken out of context". They've attempted to minimize their own racism by accusing the other side of racism where none exists.
I know we slam the Dems here a lot and I'm not saying we shouldn't. Their feet should be held to the fire just as much as the repubs...if not more. They do need to be reminded of what's important. At the same time, they still have the rest of America to govern and we here at DU are not the entire country. I'm more left than the middle of the country and I know it. It's unreasonable to assume that the rest of the country is exactly in line with my way of thinking.
We've gained some ground with this administration...far more than any other in recent memory. We've still got a ways to go.
The one thing I will never forget is what the Republicans are about and their history. The damage they've done will take years and Obama's had to take some unpopular steps to fix it. I don't mind expressing my animosity towards the republican party. I want them marginalized as the party of RW extremists and racists. I want them to be so unpopular that moderate repubs are repulsed by them. I want the republican party to remain out of power for at least the next 50 years or until they decide to go left of the Dems (I know that won't happen).
As long as the repubs remain the party of no, the party of teabaggers, the party of gun-toting extremists, the party of kicking people while they're down, and the party of racists my wish for them will continue as long as we never let anyone else forget what they are.
