How George Tenet Lied

By Ray McGovern
May 14, 2007

WOLFOWITZ (four years ago): “For bureaucratic reasons we settled on one issue, weapons of mass destruction, because it was the one reason everyone could agree on...

..................

Tenet was indeed useful to Cheney and Bush, but he is no idiot. Those who do not rely exclusively on the corporate media for their information know Tenet for what he is—a charlatan. A willing co-conspirator, he did for Bush and Cheney what propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels did for Hitler.

The key difference is that Goebbels and his Nazi collaborators, rather than writing books and taking sinecures to enrich themselves, were held accountable at Nuremberg.

..............

No WMD

Tenet knew there were no WMD. Secret British documents reveal not only that Tenet told his British counterpart the intelligence was being “fixed” around the policy. They also show that Washington and London developed a scheme to “wrongfoot” Saddam Hussein by insisting on the kind of U.N. inspections they were sure he would reject, thus providing a convenient casus belli.

1. Ray McGovern speaks Truth.
And he knows his history:

If they question why we died,
Tell them because our fathers lied.

4. Tenet betrayed the CIA and America.
That he is allowed to spew his lies on TV points to the complicity of the US Corp Media, including the Daily Show. He should have been refused access to promote his bloody book.

5. Why does everybody pretend that the White House
did not get to decide what Tenet said in the book?

6. I suspect you already know the answer to that
Lot of people don't even understand that propaganda can be true...or that sometimes disinformation comes in the form of a truth..that's "a" truth - not "the" truth.

8. I guess you have to write under the name ANONYMOUS
before anybody brings up the fact that even small-time intelligence operatives are required to have their books vetted by the White House.

And we're talking about the guy at the top.

10. I would have thought Plame taught them that
the CIA review process for books by former employees refused her permission

14. I have always felt -- ever since I saw him on TV -- that
Tenet's book was thoroughly vetted with Rove&Co. (or whomever) and that there's not a single thing in it that BushCo would disapprove of. I know there are some unpleasant things in there -- but are they new? Not many if any. FURTHER, some far more damaging things are obfuscated and covered up by Tenet in his book. It's one of those, "Here, let US investigate ourselves" kinda things.

Just my speculation. FWIW.

15. I think he reveals himself as either a shrinking violet or a colloborator.
He really, really wants to keep his shiny medal of freedom.

22. I think collaborator is the right word
I think it's perfect, in fact. It's an elaborate and very elegant cover-up.

I believe Tenet's book is part of a major propaganda effort.

16. Seeing Tenet come out in public and show his pain because he was
thrown under the bus even though he was loyal to Bush, is a lot like the old cliche about the crack seller who gets mugged and runs to the police department to report the crime.

17. There's Plenty Of Other Models Than Nazis
Dare I say that I'm tired of the constant comparisons with this regime and the Nazis. While the parallels can be made, the use of this tactic had been bringing back diminishing returns as this regime not just many things in common with the Nazis but with any authoritarian regime. You could change the name Goebbels to Gromyko and Hitler to Breznev and make the same comparison, but it wouldn't have the "emotional wallop"...or so the author thinks.

This regime is unique unto itself. The lying and deceiving wasn't done for a nationalistic cause like the Nazis but for strictly personal objectives...if anything the boooosh tactics have been to destroy the "fatherland" rather than build it up. Again, there's more of a comparison to the Soviets here who bankrupted the country and used many of the same propoaganda conventions this regime has. Gitmo has more in common with a Soviet Gulag than it does with Auschwitz.

Inversely, the Nazis are unique to anything that's ever happened in Western civilization before and since. While the boosh regime is racist, it hasn't pushed for cleansing of the population or segregation. While its shouted down its critics, they still haven't vanished and there's very much of a vocal opposition.

Unfortunately many good points go to waste on some of the very people we need to bring to our side when our rhetoric gets just as bombastic as the other side. Using constant comparisons to the Nazis forces the listener to think about Hitler and not booosh...to compare the pictures in their minds of consentration camp victims and storm troopers...pictures they don't see in our country...and it takes away from critical issues and crimes that are singular to the booosh regime. Their totalitarian is not social, it's economic.

21. Another difference: I doubt top officials will commit suicide.
Especially Chimpy; I can't see him putting a bullet in his head to escape. Running to South America or his daddy sure, but I don't see him or other top officials going the suicide route. They are in love with death, as long as somebody else is doing the killing or dying. USSR a better comparison than Nazi cult of death.
