This is my life
I work.
I live in pain.
I save money to pay for medical treatment.
When I have money I use if for pain relief / medical treatment.
I keep looking for ways to feel better without going bankrupt.

I used to care about politics, history, spirituality, art.. I still try to.
I still care about my family. I wish I wasn't a burden to them (as all sick people are on some level to their loved ones).

I wish my life was more then just work and pain management. Yet soon I fear it will be disability and pain management.

Then the sweet bliss of the old grave.

At least I can still watch comedies, read, and listen to music. Sadly, my life is probably much better then 90% of humans on this world.

Yup.. this is my life..

3. i have been suffering with an illness
for 21 years. i also have scoliosis which has gotten bad during the last 2 years. thankfully i have health insurance and a husband with a good job. i always try to take the attitude that things could be worse. i have my eyesight. i have the use of my limbs.

i feel like a burden to my husband. i was always an independent person capable of making money. on the other hand, i take care of all of our finances. hubby doesn't have to think about it.

the thing that's so scary is if god forbid something happened to him what would i do? we have no family here. i would have to move to florida to be near my granddaughter.

6. At least you have work.
Not to dismiss your other issues of course.

When I got down earlier this year, I bought an electric guitar and promised I'd teach myself to play it ~well~ within a year. Six months in and I'm much further along that I ever dreamed. The personal satisfaction is worth all the callouses and sore fingers. My brain is also very happy with the new synapses I've made, I can feel them even when I'm not playing.

Don't underestimate the power of hobbies. They are every bit as good for your well-being as diet, exercise and therapy.

7. That's my dad's life. Except he's retired.
He lives with his chronic pain due to his liver and back.

He's 100% disabled from it and it's taken so much from him. He's had to fight with depression for over 10 years because of it.

I've been helping him with it for years. The part that he snarled on is that there is nothing he can do to fix it. He's a fighter and he's overcome all the obstacles in his life but he won't beat this one. That's the fact that nearly destroyed him.

9. That's been my life for 30 years and it's only getting worse
I'm single and it's getting harder and harder to both work and find work. I spend a huge amount of time online looking for cheaper, more effective treatment alternatives (no insurance anymore-priced out of it). Before I go to sleep every night I pray that I won't wake up, so I know exactly how you're feeling.

10. I hear ya, friend . . .
my life also revolves around pain management . . . which doesn't leave a whole lot of space (physical or psychic) for much else . . . been dealing with this for 20 years, and it never gets easier . . . thank god for pain meds; without them I'd be jumping off the nearest bridge . . .

hang in there . . .

I was wondering if you knew that you have the oldest GD threads that are still active in the GD forum? For some reason two of your threads never get archived. Odd, isn't it?

12. Peace and low stress
four of my favorite words sent to me early on in my time here.
You're loved
I wish I could make it better for you but the truth is I've already slipped over into the disabled world, luckily for me I have the VA to provide for me the healthcare I paid for years ago.

Sometimes the stigma that comes with being unable to provide for oneself is almost too much to bear but we must continue to live on.

14. Have you tried natural alternative medicine?
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 08:00 AM by MN TN
A lot of it appears to be good for pain and also inflammation.
I use Aloe Life-Aloe Gold Aloevera juice, cayenne pepper and others.
For example, for sore throat and cough, I have used honey with cayenne pepper and slippery elm . Works much better for me than regular cough medicine.
Also, I have heard that accupuncture helps.
Types of bodywork can be wonderful if you can afford it.
Otherwise, very sorry to hear about your sad life.

15. I feel you. I'm so sorry.
Would that we lived in a country where all could receive effective pain management. Unfortunately, between the unaffordable system and the war on drugs crapolla, we do not.

16. Try to relax and think of things that make you happy
I know where you are as I am currently on disability. I have not had a migraine/headache free day in 15 years and now spend my days trying to remain in cool dark places. I had to drop out of my graduate program about 10 years ago roughly a semester before getting my MS in hydro-geology. Luckily I have family that help (this goes both ways as my father is in the same boat I am). I don't know what I would do with out my sister's help. I am sending my good thoughts and energy. I wish I could do more.O8)

17. I have OCD
In the Greek alpabet, O-C-D is spelled H-E-L-L.

We can only do what we can only do.

18. Gratitude
Stories like yours are regularly on my mind. It puts my issues into proportion and helps me return to a place of gratitude.

BUT! While it's good to recognize those who have it worse, I like to push for a fairer share of the pie for those of us who truly need a break. And stop the insanity of giving breaks to bankers and the money elites.

I intentionally and consciously put people in your situation in my mind. Thanks for sharing your life, it helped me.

19. Chasing the elusive magic pill takes so much time...
I am currently on four different pain pills for my back and facing possible 5-level fusion (lower back this time, had 3-level cervical fusion in 2004). We are trying PT for 3 weeks just to go through the motions so insurance knows we tried other methods. I am almost dragging the left leg when walking.

I feel for those who have this chronically...it can drive a person to desperate madness.
