What the sentinment here about the Fremont, Nebraska immigration law?

When the AZ law was passed, there was a lot of anger on here and most of the proposed alternative solutions on DU revolved around going after the employers who hire illegal immigrants, not the immigrants themselves, which I completely agree with.

However, Fremont, Nebraska has done just that, passing a law making it illegal for any employer to hire an illegal immigrant. Yet nary a peep on DU.

1. Not worth noting really

Fremont is nothing more then a tiny little town of 25,000, mainly xenophobic, morons who have no clue about any type of law.

Like their law is gonna prevent anybody from getting a rental unit if they were illegal!! HA.

How EASY is it for ANYBODY in a foreign country to rent a house or buy a home/business without even seeing the place, much less have a passport to even enter America?

Same goes for property in Europe. An insignificant "no renting to illegals" law won't prevent diddly.

As for the "no hiring to illegals" well good for them but all they are doing is making business owners take extra steps just to hire an employee and encourages them to want to shy away from hiring ANYBODY who appears to be Hispanic.

This pathetic ordinance will get shot down hard in the courts, and the sad thing about it all, is the city REALLY can't afford to defend this suit which they have promised the xenophobes they would do. They got KKKris Kobach to represent them free of charge, blindly following his "rockstar" lawyering as a self proclaimed specialist on illegal immigrant law who will come through for them.

I guess whatever helps them get over the reality of what they are gonna cost tax payers in higher property taxes when all is said and done.

Trust me, the rest of Nebraska has nothing but pity and shame for Fremont and what they got themselves into.

2. Not exactly, the ordiance does the following:

"Fremont's ordinance would require employers to use a federal online system that checks whether a person is permitted to work in the U.S.

It also would require people seeking to rent property to apply for a $5 permit at City Hall. Those who said they were citizens would receive a permit and would not have to provide documents proving legal status. Those who said they weren't citizens would receive permits, but their legal status would be checked. If they're found to be in the country illegally and are unable to resolve their status, they would be forced to leave the property.

Landlords who knowingly rent to illegal immigrants could be subject to $100 fines."

I think the system of checking if a person is permitted to work is E-Verify, which must be used by companies seeking federal contracts.

3. (1) We are not used to anything sane coming out of Nebraska. (2) The impact of a

town does not match that of a state - especially a state in the spotlight due to McInsane's continued presence.

Personally, I agree that the emphasis should be on the business community that makes money on the backs of immigrant labor.

I also think it could be pushed from a moral or ethical perspective - fighting "slave labor" as a moral imperative.

But even "our" party does not want to do anything that goes against the wishes (orders) of the corporations. Hence, the pro-insurance company health "reform,", the almost-worthless financial "regulation," etc., etc., etc.

4. The Fremont City Council suspended the ordinance...

...rather than face the costs of defending it against legal challenges filed by The ACLU and MALDEF.

5. It wouldn't have worked anyway

Employers--and landlords, too, come to think of it--would simply subcontract the hiring/renting. To make the law work, all employer contractors and subcontractors would have to obey it, too. Anyway, cue the Vonage theme!
