New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon said Wednesday he helped his former spokesman get a job in another county department – despite demoting him in May amid an ongoing state law enforcement investigation that led to a criminal charge.
On Monday, the State Bureau of Investigation charged Charles Graham Smith Jr. with illegally accessing a government computer, a felony.
Smith, 31, was charged with accessing a criminal database to print Division of Motor Vehicles information on another person "for the purpose of obtaining access to a nightclub," according to an arrest warrant.
Smith, formerly the sheriff's public information officer who was demoted to working at the jail in May, didn't get just any job with the county.
He started a new job June 15 in the county's information technology department after McMahon told County Manager Bruce Shell about Smith's interest in leaving law enforcement and working with computers.
