When It Comes To Large Swaths Of The American Voting Public, I Think 'Blazing Saddles' Had It Right

Jim: <consoling Bart> What did you expect? "Welcome, sonny"? "Make yourself at home"? "Marry my daughter"? You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

:hi:

or my favorite joke from that film...
(when the towns people are dividing up into teams)
the mayor speaks up...
"Ok, we will take all the Dagos, Jews, Chinks and "nigros"... BUT NO IRISH!"

30. Especially since the guy who said that seemed to be Irish.
It has been a while since I watched it.

3. A that movie got many things right
Good comedy is good for the soul, and full of truth too.

9. In the abstract sense, the US has a ton of them already!
the people expect them- and so readily accept even more.

5. True, true. Sadly, what is good for the country can't be polished up and fit into a 15 second HD ad
(think BP ads).

Except that the ReBPublicans can make what's BAD for the country work in that format and fool everyone at the same time.

And I could use a good laugh these days.

7. I just saw an unedited cut the other day; I forgot how wonderful it was.
I had to wonder if it would even get made today--I rather doubt it.

10. It might have gotten made, but then Faux Noise would fabricate some scandal
...with the headline reading something like, *gasp* "Did Mel Brooks have sex with Anne Bancroft?" :wow:

14. This is the DVD that I have:
http://www.amazon.com/Blazing-Saddles-Cleavon-Little/dp/0790731487/ref=sr_1_2?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1280379626&sr=1-2

I notice that Amazon also lists a Special 30 year Anniversary version. Could that be what you viewed? in any event, it's cheap enough so I may order it.

20. We've lost so many of the geniuses who worked on it
Dom Deluise, Cleavon Little, Madeline Kahn, Harvey Korman, Richard Pryor, and Slim Pickens.

Mel and Gene are still around, but we don't get the likes of them working too much on such broad humor anymore. I am still waiting to see Mel Brooks finish up The History of the World, Part II!

12. "...These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons."
I LOVED that movie when I first saw it in 1975, and I may dig out the DVD and view it again later this evening. But if I were to truly embrace that elitist sentiment, I don't think I'd be spending all this much time on DU! A William Buckley or Ayn Rand oriented site would have been my haven.

15. It's not elitist because it's people pretending to talk about other people
but really talking about themselves. That's the bedrock of MB's comedy.

25. IOW, it's only funny because it's a Mel Brooks character who is a moron
calling other people morons. It's self referential and not really a statement about other people.

Maybe you had to be there. lol

26. It's quite possible that "I don't get it". That happens frequently at my advanced age.
But I hear very similar statements from some people of the left, and seemingly in all seriousness. Elsewhere on this thread, another poster (and with an anarchist avatar no less!) quoted with apparent approval a very similar statement by H. L. Mencken.

they may have the monopoly on saying them with humor.

29. Of course not. That sentiment is characterisic almost exclusively of the Right!
That's why I get a bit "touchy" on what I regard as "snobbery/elitism" from someone of the "Left". Do I miss some "Swiftian satire"? At 80.5, frequently but NOT always!

17. Or, H.L. Mencken's analysis (proven right at least twice) on the same subject.
“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” - H.L. Mencken

I saw BS more times than I can remember--and I can actually, in my mind, see that scene played out.

32. One of the most memorable lines in that film, and I've quoted it often
along with the scene where the sheriff says "Where are all the white women at?" to the KKK members. That's all they see when they look at an person of color!

(Of course, nothing beats "Someone go back and get us a shitload of dimes!")
