Two local stories here, probably not very different from you hear on your local news. Each of these affected me, but for very different reasons.
Story 1: A 23 year old medical researcher was walking home from work. He lives within walking distance of the university where he was part of a high level lab team. A Miami native, he was very highly regarded and was seen to have a very bright future and the possibility to do some big medical stuff.
A thug and thugess accosted him less than a block from home. They demanded money. He had none, but offered his wallet. A neighbor heard him begging for his life. The neighbor started out just as the both the thug and thugess stabbed him repeatedly. The neighbor yelled for someone to call 911 and then ran to the man, still yelling to call 911.
Later interviewed on teevee, with voice disguised and face covered to protect him, he was asked why he ran to the man. He said "I knew he was dying and I didn't want him to die alone."
He had never met the man before. The young researched died in his arms as the man cradled his head and comforted him.
Story 2: A then 13 year old boy in a youth detention center brutally raped and bludgeoned to death a female caretaker. There is not question of his guilt.
They intend to try him as an adult.
I feel awful for the woman. But this is a child. It is a serious dilemma and I have no answers. But the word compassion seems to have a place in this story, too.
