Breaking: Judge Haults sections of SB1070 - Goddard Responds
Edited on Wed Jul-28-10 12:47 PM by Kevin Spidel
Judge throws out:

Section 2B - The meat of it. "No unlawful stop detention or arrest made by a law enforcement official."

Section 3. - The papers part. Willful failure to complete or carry an alien registration document.

Goddard Statement on 1070 Ruling

Jan Brewer played politics with immigration, and she lost.

Rather than providing the leadership Arizona needs to solve the immigration problem, Jan Brewer signed a bill she could not defend in court which has led to boycotts, jeopardized our tourism industry and polarized our state.

It is time to look beyond election year grandstanding and begin to repair the damage to Arizona's image and economy.

Perhaps now we in Arizona can focus on effective steps to fight border crime and keep our families safe. Now we can focus on steps, like I have been taking, to go after border crime and cut off the cash that flows to organized criminal cartels that smuggle thousands into the U.S.

Now, we should start making smart decisions about immigration - beyond sound bites, fear mongering and political stunts.

Terry Goddard is the strong challenger to Brewer who gave us this bill. Please support him! http://www.terrygoddard.com

4. No...
Is the AG which removed himself from defending this bill in courts. Stood up to Brewer and this bill. He is running against her in the General. We need national support his way to beat her. Brewer gave us #SB1070

15. Hell no he hasn't, he won't and he will....
.. start grabbing every Hispanic person he can see when this 'law' goes into effect, he's already expanded his Tent Gulag to accommodate all the 'illegals' he plans to scoop up...

Arpaio opens ‘Section 1070’ at Tent City for violators of new law

PHOENIX - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has opened a new section of Tent City in time for its 17th anniversary.

The new section is called Section 1070 to house violators of the new illegal immigration law, SB 1070.

Section 1070 is able to hold up to 100 inmates, but reportedly has room to grow if needed.

Sheriff Arpaio said he wants to assure citizens of Maricopa County that there will always be room for violators of the new law.

Tent City currently has about 200 inmates with immigration or agency holds against them.

They are already housed separately for easy management.

16. He also has more sweeps planned for tomorrow
Only now, he may do them with a vengeance. His sweeps were oppressive enough when he was in a GOOD mood...

21. And hopefully this will be the LAST straw for DOJ
I mean now he will be ignoring a FEDERAL INJUNCTION.

This is very much so what happened with Governor Wallace...

Now the question will be if DOJ goes there, and if the 101 comes down with State Guard under federal control? (For the kids mostly, who probably have no idea what I am talking about)

14. The thing is, she probably hasn't lost
Once you scraped away all the crud on the bill, it was essentially a response to the increased number of Arizona voters who were Hispanic (and tended to vote democrat by a 2 to 1 margin). It's actually very difficult for an illegal immigrant to register to vote, and the vast majority probably don't even try to register as that's a way they could get caught. What it was supposed to do though is make it easier to intimidate legal Hispanic citizens from voting, and even before the law went into effect, legal Hispanics started getting harassed by their fellow white citizens. It also has prompted many of them to move out of Arizona, further reducing the democratic voting roles.

This is what Brewer and republicans essentially wanted, and they were apparently ready to destroy Arizona to get it.

19. AZ has had no voter reg. fraud by illegal immigrants
Edited on Wed Jul-28-10 01:58 PM by pinboy3niner
Brewer manufactured the issue when she was AZ Secretary of State. Greg Palast examined those claims:

Brewer, then Secretary of State, had organized a racially loaded purge of the voter rolls that would have made Katherine Harris blush. Beginning after the 2004 election, under Brewer's command, no less than 100,000 voters, overwhelmingly Hispanics, were blocked from registering to vote. In 2005, the first year of the Great Brown-Out, one in three Phoenix residents found their registration applications rejected.

That statistic caught my attention. Voting or registering to vote if you're not a citizen is a felony, a big-time jail-time crime. And arresting such criminal voters is easy: after all, they give their names and addresses.

So I asked Brewer's office, had she busted a single one of these thousands of allegedly illegal voters? Did she turn over even one name to the feds for prosecution?

No, not one.

20. I remember reading that
But I didn't want to say NO illegal immigrant had never voted. Anyway, it's only a sidenote really. The point is that she's driven off or intimidated legal Hispanic voters already.

22. Exactly
And Palast's article makes the point about Hispanic voter intimidation very effectively (and it's a great read, too).
