Bond’s motives are a mystery in U.S. attorney ouster

Which of these theories do you believe?
A. Sen. Kit Bond does not have control of his office. Unknown to him, a senior staffer put U.S. Attorney Todd Graves on the down escalator.
B. Bond energetically went to bat for Graves after it became clear that the Justice Department had put the brother of U.S. Rep. Sam Graves (no love lost between their staffs) on the target list.
C. Bond, the Senate’s fiercest advocate of ballot purity, was nowhere in the picture as the Justice Department — led by Todd Graves’ replacement, Bradley Schlozman — tried to stir up Sturm und Drang over Missouri voter registrations just in time for a nation-turning Senate election.
Not buying any of this? Funny, but that’s what Bond was selling last week.
To be sure, there was no evidence to the contrary at the end of another tumultuous week of U.S. attorney stories, testimony and chatter. But the revelation from Missouri’s senior four-term senator — who entered the fray in a grand way with his volunteered e-mail about the U.S. attorney controversy — had insiders of both parties making strange noises.
Come to think of it, those noises sounded a whole lot like guffaws.
