14. As horrible as this may sound...

...this might have a positive effect. Sometimes, those on the right have to be exposed to "tragedy" in a personal way before it registers. I can't remember his name, but not long ago when a suicide prevention bill dealing with mental health was up for vote in the House, there was one legislator who was dead set against it and was very nasty about it. Two weeks before the vote (I think), his son killed himself. The representative changed his tune quickly and backed its passage. (Any one remember this? Did I get it mostly right?)

It is sad, but for some, they do not understand the concept of "empathy" and, therefore, must personally experience something before it allows them to see another's perspective.
