What's with Elton: plays AZ concert, slams boycotting musicians
Edited on Tue Jul-27-10 01:40 PM by UTUSN
This article says at the end he is married to his partner. LIMBOsevic said he's NOT "married," that he (JOHN) "shares the same stance on Gay marriage as OBAMA."

Elton John's choice words for boycotting musicians

By Cathalena E. Burch Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Friday, July 23, 2010

Elton John didn't mince words in slamming his fellow musicians for boycotting Arizona over the controversial SB 1070 immigration law. From the stage at his sold-out Tucson Arena concert Thursday night, John savored a few choice, not-so-family-friendly words:

"We are all very pleased to be playing in Arizona. I have read that some of the artists won't come here. They are (expletive)wits! Let's face it: I still play in California, and as a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever. So what's the (expletive) with these people?"

John has never been one to cave into political pressure from his musical colleagues. He ignored an artist boycott of Israel in June over the flotilla fiasco and played a show in Tel Aviv. He also played Rush Limbaugh's latest wedding reception in early June, which drew the ire of gays and lesbians. Limbaugh is vehemently anti-gay marriage; John is married to his longtime partner David Furnish.

"As a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever" in California? Say what? None? Zip?

He doesn't come across as the sharpest tool in the shed.

42. Again with the boycotts - I'm sure every state has something he doesn't agree with
but it's ridiculous as a business person to pick and choose and boycott for this or that, just like it is with a person boycotting companies.

47. If he feels there is a civil rights violation that he has the power to stop,
through a wide movement, then all the power to him.

Instead, he is attacking a movement of solidarity on the grounds that he plays in another state that violates his rights?!? I mean...really...does that make the other artists fuckwits or him?

My suggestion isn't for him to boycott on his own, but create a similar movement to exert economic pressure on the state *if the issue is that important to him an others*. I honestly don't think he has a point at all and any grounds to attack these people on. His stated grounds about California are just ridiculous, and stand as no foundation to call anyone any names.

:wtf:

I guess you think principles are ridiculous then, since they don't mean anything if you don't ever stand up for them.

10. Elton is an entertainer who wrote some good songs 30-40 years ago. He also is a
Liberace/Wayne Newton-style Las Vegas lounge act who no longer has the ability to create anything worthwhile.

He follows the money, and always has.

We can trash him as much a we want, but it willnot change a thing.

He will remain a jerk.

He will remain irrelevant.

For a moment I considered adding the <sarcasm> smilie. But I mean it both ways. On one hand, he's a b-grade talent who is sucking up.

OTOH, it's a gig. He get's to play for people who want to hear him. Felt the same way about Rush's wedding. Being a big person, I can observe a truce for the day.

You are right It changes nothing.

72. Elton John is a materialistic pig who attempts to make up for his own lack of physical beauty...
by paying obscene amounts of money for beautiful things.
That's the story of his life.

77. ha! my fave for best post of the thread. he's had his share of beautiful things that have cost him
millions over the years, hasn't he? All things one could imagine, he's bought. He's been a jerk about many things over the years.

81. That makes him sound like the William Randolph Hearst/Charles Foster Kane of music

75. I am not going to defend him on the central issue
Edited on Tue Jul-27-10 11:54 PM by dsc
but I will say one thing. His position on civil unions ins't as hypocritical as you all paint it to be. In the UK, civil unions have all the rights of a marriage not the pathetic small number they have here. I still think the word matters but it the comparision isn't apples to apples.

79. IIRC, Elton played Sun City back in the day.
The man doesn't have a solidaristic bone in his body.

I hope he at least had the decency to NOT play "Border Song" or "Burn Down The Mission", since he's forfeited the right to play those anymore with this step.
